Looking at the photos for no1 rod bearings, are you sure they're in the right place?? I thought that when the mains failed they always took out the adjacent rod bearings, hence doubting they're in the right place in that photo . I suspect 2 & 3 are 1 & 2.
And was it supercharged?

Also, do you know the year & mileage of that 2nd engine?

Yes, they're in the correct place. You'll note the second main failed first and failed its adjacent rod bearings, the forward main started to spin but the engine locked up before the forward rod spun. I don't have any further details on the engine. You're digging up really old stuff.

Not sure what you mean about a second engine- those two pictures are of bearings from the same engine year/miles are on the paper 2011 E90 73947 miles.

Just ~11mths ago . I'm working may way through the blown engines list, verifying & adding info where I can. The earliest ones were 6-7yrs ago! (not posted by you).

Ah yea, now I look properly lol, I can see that no2 mains is worse.
Unusual for no2 to have gone (based on internet reading not RL stripping ), thanks for the extra info

In your original post (I edited out some photos in my quote) you mentioned you had a couple of failures that week, the other photos show no1 RB shot.

[update, as of 29-3-24, I am no longer updating this list or the categorised one in my following post as I have created my own thread for it].

Ok, so I've finally gone through the whole list! (& added 9 missing/new cases). I would like to state that where I've written 'confirmed blown engine' etc, I only mean that I have confirmed that is what the owner states. Although for some I have found some extra info (e.g photos) & posted the links that corroborates this. I've also corrected some vague or incorrect links & added name changes.
Where no links are provided, see original list.

Quite a few of the cases are from failed main bearings! With most of those being supercharged motors.....
And a couple of engines destroyed by an injector failing & a couple by oil pump failures!

In my following post I have separated out the mains failures from the RB failures etc, as well as removed dead linked ones & just incorrect info, see my post below. For some reason I seem to have plenty of time atm! Can't imagine why!
Anyway, this list is a direct copy of the positions of the original list in the op. (I would hide it in spoiler tags, but this forum lacks that function ).
I am adding new/newly found cases to the lists in my following post.

1.maicol76 - confirmed main bearings failed, 29k kms (18k miles) (RBs condition unknown)
2.RenoE92M3 - confirmed rod bearings failed, 43k miles, BMW replaced engine (main's condition unknown)
3.zOOm - confirmed engine blew up "Piston went through engine block" (likely rod bearings), 59k miles
4.MathewDavid - NOT blown up! Ticking noise later went away!
5.Gatchaman - confirmed rod & main bearings, 5.6k! miles
6.I LOVE MY M3 - NOT blown up! Premature wear to rod & bearings, more info here https://www.m3post.com/forums/showpo...6&postcount=24 , motor stripped due to noises.
7.taleof2bricks - confirmed blown engine, rod thrown, failed rod bearings, 28k miles
8.DLSJ5 - confirmed blown engine, but due to oil leak from supercharger! Ran out of oil! Plus had high boost! Not RB issue.
9.armorrig - not confirmed! No evidence or post of a blown engine.
10.elmariachi (name changed to satinghostrider) - conf.pistons broken + unknown amount of bearing wear, possibly due to detonation
11.h4nh - confirmed engine blew up in a later post, supercharged & run 89/91 fuel!
12.Brooklyn Mark - likely blown but not confirmed, 38k miles, supercharged, forum banned him 4/2014
13.e90m3_6MT - confirmed blown engine, broken con-rod etc, 107k km, 66.5k miles
14.Boxed - confirmed (by BMW) rod bearings worn out, bearings replaced MY 2011 (no more info)
15.jacobe92 - confirmed rod bearing failure, 31k miles, (no more info)
16.Sti2e92sedan - confirmed seized engine but NOT RBs fault, failed oil pump
17.M3NST3R - confirmed blown engine, 47k miles, MY 2008, replaced by BMW (no more info)
18.Canadian - confirmed spun rod bearings, 6.3k! miles, repaired by BMW (did some track days[not noted previous track mentions])
19.zgirl1999 - unknown, website gone
20.bigtracing - confirmed failed rod bearings, 96k
21.Artem@ONEighty - confirmed bearings failed, but unsure which, 28k, engine replaced by BMW
22.Elvace - not confirmed! The photos of 3 RBs he did take show modest wear, additionally he had a broken clutch plate which was almost certainly the source of the noise in the video! 105k kms(65.2k miles)
23.kinnsella - confirmed rod bearigs failed, 35k, BMW replaced engine with a reman unit
24.HapaM3 - confirmed rod bearings failed, 47k, (some tracking)
25.JDATX - confirmed rod bearings failed, 39k miles, replaced under BMW warranty

besiktas - bearings hadn't failed, after asking him about it he said via PM "If i recall correctly, at the time, i had bunch of knocking sounds at the time and ended up being an issue of throttle actuators again, ..... , but i was told the bearings were fine. Since then haven't had issues, at 99,600 miles still on original bearings."

Chatting via PM's he said eventually a faulty o2 sensor was found (hence spark plug probs), but that the rod bearings hadn't failed.

Bert (from BE IIRC) has given me a slightly more updated list from 6-2015 (I'll attach it to this thread). I have now gone through that list and added a few from it to here.

Their are 12 cases listed here in Regular guy's S65 bearing clearance wiki, sadly the links to the photos don't work anymore, and there's no way to know if these blown or damaged engines are already in this list.
And 6 more here by him as well, but even less info here (a couple of which though do at least say what damage happened, I did add to the list above).

No oil reports. I can't think of a single time where a customer with a failed engine ever had any oil test history. Coincidence? Probably not... In my experience, most engine failure customers aren't really BMW enthusiasts and had no idea of the S65 lottery until they won it.

Attached is a pic of six S65's on one of our racks waiting tear down. From left to right:

1: 2009 S65B40, 77k miles, 10w60, seized #1 main.

2: S65 4.6, approximately 45k miles on the build, spun #4 bearing, rod broke, hole in the block. 10w60 oil. 2008 block casting date.

3: 2009 S65B40, 63k miles, 10w60, rod knocking, swarf in oil.

4: 2011 S65B40, 44k miles, 10w60, #1/5 spun rods (first journal).

5: 2013 S65B40, 51k miles, 5w50, rod knock- Cyl #6 bearing galled, not spun yet.

6: 2008 S65B40, 120k miles, supercharged, original bearings, 10w60, spun #2/6 journal.

Picture #2 are more S65's dismantled and waiting further assessment. One (front and center) was a sleeved 4.4 block that had rod bearing failure after 16k miles from the build. That block may still be good to rebuild. Lower middle block had an injector failure and scored a cylinder. The other two blocks in that pic are main failures and cracked.

Interestingly, I have actually welded a windowed block and rebuilt it successfully. It was a perfect scenario however with where the hole was, no bore/mains damage, etc...Agree that usually it's not an option. That engine is still running as far as I know. I'd also like to experiment with welding a cracked main web and seeing how well that kind of repair would take...

It always seemed odd that everyone says the S65 with the block cracks are paperweights...seems like some of the well-known AL cylinder head/block repair places could certainly handle the repair.

I'm thinking of places (close-ish to me) like Midwest or Tri-State Cylinder Head.

Blimey, I'm usually quite sensitive to these noises & I missed that one! Lol, although at least I have the excuse I'm not in the car .
But yea I agree, at the transition from 1s to 2s is where the noise stands out. I've come across loads of customers over the years who either don't hear, or ignore unusual sounds coming from their car!

Oh btw, I've had a PM from CrissiE92, another engine's gone down , he suspects a spun main (I don't know why he suspects that atm), more info to follow. He's a new forum member, but I noticed he's had 2 posts already, so he may have posted in some other thread about it. Not checked yet.

Yea but the issue is, it isn't that they are just cracked, when an engine throws a rod it nearly always punches a hole through the block, which just causes too much damage to be worthwhile &/or even possible to repair. Well, 99.9% of time anyway! See Deansbimmers post about being able to actually repair one! lol

I'm confused by 1 of your engine reports though, how do you know with engine no1 that it's no1 main is seized when you haven't torn them down yet? , I'm guessing that you've at least had the sump off & seen that main is discoloured?
I'm betting that engine no4's no1 main is buggered, wanta bet against me?
Eng no6 did well to do 120k miles, especially with a supercharger!, although, I don't suppose you have any idea how long the supercharger had been on it?

That 2nd photo's funny angle is making me dizzy for some reason, lol.
Btw, that's a lot of engines in your workshop! Dead engines! Am I counting right at 10 S65s in those photos?

I appreciate it's a very rare occurrence, but it could be a low(?) cost thing to do to save a possible high cost failure. Actually, how much would it cost just for testing 8 injectors? Or would we just be better off using a fuel cleaner occasionally?

Re repaired block, wow! They were lucky! I should listen to my own phrase of 'the only absolute, is their are no absolutes!' . (And no, despite the well known phrase, not even death* & taxes are always absolute ).

I think the best care is stop the car if emergency mode.

That's what saved my engine when my injector stucked open.

40,000 miles.

Problem is,
Previous owner always used 87 octane fuel without cleaning additives.

I did not like that and started putting 95 octane fuel (which contains cleaning additives).

Stopped the car for 2 weeks to go offshore to work, when I came back, in the first ride, it happened.

This is great work. Definitely the kind of thing that is perfect for isolation. Using the forum as a great M3 sample group it would be so interesting to see number of total M3's on the forum vs number of RB failures vs number of RB replacement.
It would probably be the closest we will come to seeing a true percentage of failure.

Trouble is we wouldn't know if we got the total number of M3 owners.
I think their is a thread where the op posted a poll asking about RBs replaced or not, & engine blown or not. I don't think it'd been posted to in some while. I guess we could bring it back to life , I'll see if I can find it. [edit] Turns out theirs a few, but I think it was this one I was thinking of, it's certainly had the most votes at nearly 200.
I've bumped it btw, but when I re-read it I see some of the options need editing.

Btw, it's probably best if you don't quote my whole list, it pads out the page a lot & I can't update it .
