Thanks for the input fellas. Here's my game plan;

1.) Set up appt at BMW dealer, share the videos and get a diagnosis. I'm not too excited about paying $175 diagnosis fee with the car 400 miles out of warranty and having just spent a month in their shop, but it's worth some piece of mind.

2.) Also take it by my local Indy, he is certified BMW tech and knows M-cars, and have him take a listen.

3.) Third opinion won't hurt. There's a local shop that's very reputable on here and has a lot of experience with S65 bearings, taking it by there tomorrow.

In the meantime, I'm not going to stop driving it. FWIW, I flogged it pretty hard last night and the noise was much quieter, barely noticeable when I got home and listened in the garage. Temp was cooler, that seems to be a determining factor with this. I will post updates as soon as I find out.

Ok, let us know .
Precaution is better than huge costs in repair .

08 M3 83K miles. Factory bearings.

Ok I'm pretty new and have read as much as possible so don't shoot me.

So as of right now the preferred solution is BE Bearings correct? Corrects all deficiencies, yes?

Any failures with BE yet? I realize that they are pretty new. I searched but couldn't find any.

Also the 10w-60 oil is compatible with the BE Bearings. But what if I went with BE Bearings but switched to 0w-40? Is that too much clearance then at that point?

I've never used Plastigage -- always used bore gauges. For me, Plastigage is more about making sure you're in the ball park than measuring for accuracy.

None.

BE Recommends keeping the heavier weight oil with their bearings. If you do change, then there are some nice race oils in the 20W50 range.

With the corrected clearance in the BE Bearings, I would expect there'd be no need to change from the recommended 10w-60.

So after a visit to my dealer, here is the verdict: ticking is attributed to expansion of heat shields and is not internal to engine. To actually pinpoint the issue, they want another $300 in labor to remove heat shields. Since the heat shields don't pose an issue to normal operation of the vehicle, I declined. I'm still waiting on a call back from the shop foreman, but I am wondering why all of a sudden heat shields would start to make a noise. I was very cognizant of noises when I bought the car around 2000 miles ago and I did not notice the ticking. Regardless I have it documented and I've done a couple hundred miles with the noise so I figure if the engine was going to grenade it would have done so by now. Still, it leaves me a little uneasy. Contemplating an extended warranty just to be sure, a $20k engine not going to be good if it goes.

It's not the first time this has been identified and it did turn out to be just that. And not bearings. An extended warranty is more than the ~$2000 you'll spend doing the bearings. Just do it. You'll rest much easier. Worrying about bearing failure detracts from the enjoyment of the car.

Doing the swap as preventative maintenance also lets you know how your motor treated the stick bearings for your mileage. If yours are trashed at 20k miles, Id be concerned the next set will be as well although maybe increased clearance bearings will help. Mine had what I consider excess wear at 60k so I now think I will do them again at 120k or less, probably with BE bearings. I drive this car about 8k per year so it will be a few more years since I am only at 78k now. Not a big deal to me and easier and cheaper than an engine swap (I do my own work).

Yeah it's been hanging over my head since the noise started, my concern is what if I get the rod bearings done then the mains fail or the new bearings are spun after a few thousand miles? I haven't dug into the posts about which bearings are best so I need to spend some time researching a solution that will ensure many more miles of trouble-free driving. I'd love to get out to the track, but won't be doing so until bearings are done.

Warranty companies are experts at finding loopholes in the contract language. You may feel different but I don't think they are worth the trouble.

If you can hear the ticking noise when your S65 is cold , it can not come from the heat shields !

My thoughts exactly, that's why I let my factory warranty run out and put the cash in a rainy day fund. I was just hoping that fund would last a bit longer than a few months out of warranty.

It's only when the engine is up to operating temp and with relatively warm ambient temps. So it could be just that. I let a few of my other gear head friends listen to it and they say it sounds like a heat shield, granted their experience is with cars other than BMWs so they're not familiar with our bearing issues. Still might get a second opinion diagnosis, I'll definitely post any updates.

Yup....add me to bucket.
36k miles.
No warning signs(erratic ticking, no metal shavings in oil).

Car is at dealer now.

A very depressing feeling...
