Officially back in the E92 game...

Moved to P-cars for a few years, had two 991.1S and a Cayenne Turbo....ufnrotunately some idiot turned left in front of my Cayenne a month ago without looking and it was totaled after I only had it for three months. Meanwhile the Porsche used market has gone insane and there are no deals to be had at any sort of reasonable price. I actually sold both of my 911's for a good bit more than I paid for them. The insurance company also gave me $5k more for the Cayenne Turbo than I paid for it in March, so that was sweet.

Flash forward to today...flew to OC to pick it up and drive back home today. 2013 Gintani Stage 2 supercharged, full Dinan exhaust, Vorsteiner CF hood, rod bearings done, 55k miles, new engine installed under warranty at 25k miles, looks brand new inside and out....did I mention it's fast?

Might need a race exhaust, some CF goodies, and a bumper shave though...it's good to be back, at least until I can afford a GT3.

Not really, I loved the E92 the first time around, only sold it to get a 911. The Porsche used car market is very strange in how prices fluctuate for certain models and prices are also heavily influenced by build/options list. The NA cars especially have held value extremely strong. I bought my last 991.S for $58k 2.5 years ago and sold it in March for $66k after driving it 9k miles. Porsches have tons of options and finding the right build is like finding a unicorn. All three of the ones I owned were unicorns, the Cayenne Turbo had over $50k in options plus $9k Akrapovic exhaust/$3k tune/etc.

I looked at every single 991/Cayman GTS/S/Cayenne Turbo/GTS in the entire country for a month and could not find a single one with the right combination of build/condition/miles/price that I was looking for, so here I am. Didn't want to overpay. Cayman GTS are selling for what they sold for or more compared to 3 years ago. Same with 991.1's. There are very few Cayenne Turbos for sale and I'd only want one that could match what I had before or close to it without paying more than I did for the one that got wrecked. Just wasn't possible and I didn't want to drive the Ford Fiesta rental car for another month.

Having said all that, I always keep my eyes peeled and if I found perfection at a good price again I'd have to consider it.

I feel like I did, basically got the supercharger/rod bearings/other goodies for close to free vs KBB private party value, plus Nevada private party sales have no sales tax, saves $3k vs dealer

No it is not a downgrade. I own a 911 as well and I still enjoy driving my m3 more.

Black interior, ZCP, preferably supercharged, rod bearings done, prefer alpine white, relatively low miles, well maintained. This car had it all and full service records too, plus the new engine only has 30k on it.

No because - Apples and Oranges

E9xM3 is one of, if not, the best front engine, RWD, NA V8 cars available.

911 is rear engine .......

I've driven a Turbo Porsche and several E9x cars and let me tell you, it is a downgrade there.

Welcome back. Not sure I would have sold the P cars you did. The ability to drive them while they gain value is well amazing....You wont get that on the m3. Its part of why I am likely headed towards a gt3. Imagine putting 5 k miles a year on a car and it appreciates.

I got pretty lucky with both of the 991's.

First one - found a super loaded "enthusiast" build 2014 991S with PCCB, powerkit, aerokit, manual trans, etc with 9k miles on it for $76k at Carmax, was around $83k with taxes and extended warranty. Original MSRP was $146k. Knew they way underpriced it. Bought it, sold it for $100k a month later.

Second one - found on Autotrader, Had been in a front-end accident, damage was pretty minor but it was on the Carfax. Some bigshot attorney owned it as his daily driver and he just wanted to clear some space for an incoming GT3RS, he had 6 or 7 other Porsches. Had full $12k TechArt body kit, full leather interior, desirable white/black color combo, etc, 34k miles when I bought it. He was asking $62.5k, I was susprised he took 58k but I think he just wanted a serious buyer and to be done with it. I'm sure if he had put it on Rennlist it would've sold in a few hours. Knew I'd be able to drive it a few years and sell it for at least close to what I paid, but the market held strong and got more than I expected.

Decided I wasn't driving it enough (had an X3 that I drove 80% of the time) to justify having that much money sitting in my garage so I sold it, bought the Cayenne Turbo for $20k less, then used the rest to landscape my backyard. Loved the CTT, super comfortable, pretty damn fast for an SUV, but I won't miss the shitbox auto transmission. Now I'm back in a supercharged M3 with an extra $16k to do whatever with....so it all worked out.

The interior of the Porsche with full leather and the PDK are both worlds above the M3, but it's not like the M3 is a pile of trash either. One day when the market cools off a bit, I'll get a Cayman GTS or another 991 GTS or a GT3. It might be a while though.

Well yes, and I’m sure the turbo is a downgrade from a 812 Superfast, but they are at a different price point. For the price, a regular 911 doesn’t drive better than a m3. And the M3 is definitely a more tossable car which can result in it being a bit more fun if you’re into skidding about and driving over the limit.

Never had the pleasure to drive a 911, but I always assume the next step up from an M3 would be a 911. So coming back to an M3 might be seen as a downgrade?

I’ve driven a few 991s (Carrera S, GT3 RS, GT3 on track), and they were absolutely sublime.

I love my new-to-me M3 V8, but I plan to get into a 991 in a few years time when I can afford it.

I'm going to the LA Porsche Experience Center in 3 weeks to do the GT3 package, pretty excited about it since I've never driven a GT3 and a lot of the reviews seem to say you might wind up in an RS depending on availability.
