Blown motors, Rod Bearing failure S65 Registry.

All these blown motors due to bearing problems has me VERY concerned now. Most people describe a ticking sound from 1,600 -2,000 RPM that's pretty subtle but present at idle. It was first thought that this mainly occurred to 2008 cars, but more lately, there have been a few 2010+ cars with the same issue and most with very low mileage.

If your car crapped out (ie loss of power) on you WHILE DRIVING, PLEASE file a complaint with the NHTS here:

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml

MAYBE, they can put some pressure on BMW to do something about this issue, like at least extend the warranty.

I'd like to start a registry JUST IN CASE this problem starts to show up more and more as these cars show up in more numbers.
My quick search shows these case.
Please add any other cases you see here. I'm hoping this will show up on a Google search and more people out there will find this thread and add to it. I'm really hoping we don't have an S54 situation with our motors too.

Blown motor, but the same ticking sound many have described before the engine fails.

Possible case here, but no follow-up. Vids have since been removed.

This was one of the early cases I remember. I can't seem to find the thread here.

This one is new to me:

There's a bunch on YouTube:

There are a LOT more on YouTube. We only have a small percentage of owners who are members here. I'm sure there are people who don't notice the ticking or don't want to potentially label their car as damaged for resale value purposes, but this is best way to show BMW there is a problem if your motor blows. It's basically how the S54 guys had their engines fixed by BMW when a bunch of cases started showing up on the net.
PLEASE add to this thread if you know of other cases.

Here's a very nice compilation of engine failures broken down by state and year by senorfunkypants. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=935368

If you're in California and your engine blew, check out this thread where the tuxblackedo got a buy back after the warranty expired by getting a lawyer involved: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=894665
.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

IMO this is NO WAY like s54 cover up issue and no need for worry. My car is 5 years old and runs great. Sure it makes noise, but they all do. As far as bearings are concerned, people like to think it's the bearings ala e46 m3, but there has been no proof at all that the bearings are any different in the newer 2013 cars. Also I think the problem lies in the bedplate/windage tray. As some cars have had repairs to the bedplate and been fine. Possible slightly misaligned or certain stresses during or after assembly causing them to fail. Only a few cars have really failed (throwing rods out blocks and such)..

Anyways, curious to see the responses

Weren't the E46 and early E9X issues more of a bearing clearance issue vs just crappy bearings?

Agreed, no doubt some guys have had issues and that's very unfortunate, but it's nothing like the S54.

You guys take me too literally. What I mean is, BMW initially said the blown S54's were do to driver error, ie overreved. Then the SMG cars started blowing too and they still denied there was a problem.
If we have a list of bearing problems here, then BMW won't be able to say it's not an issue at all. The S54 was so bad, then essentially did a recall.

i think this is a great idea, never hurts to be safe and document what failures there are just in case it gets out of hand

I don't think your thread is a bad idea at all, I just don't see this as being on the same level that the S54 rod bearing issue was.

S65 bearing issue is way overhyped - it's a very high revving V8 with tight tolerances, and given the production numbers it's probable for a few people to have problems

Although these issues may be overhyped, I think it's great that aus put together a registry of motors that have had serious problems. Hopefully there won't be any to add to the list and if there are more failures it would be great to see them referenced here in the future.

I agree with you and see your point, but tell me this. If you start hearing ticking from your engine, and the dealer says it's nothing, which thread are you going to go searching for as soon as you get home?

I know there were older threads on the ticking sound, but can't find them, so if anyone comes across one, please post them in this thread.

Agreed. That last one with the pics and supposed "oil filter causing failure" did show an issue with only 1 main. Making me assume out of alignment or machining flaw.

Over hyped? This represents more documented blown motors than seen on the more produced N54/N55.

And The forum only represent a small fraction of M3 owners...

The 2 first videos don't even sound like the same issues to me? I've heard the loud ticking noise in person (very first video) and there is nothing subtle about it.

what the forum represents is a small limited number of onwers yes; but only the negative posts come through; No one posts, "hey my car runs fine" you only hear the negatives or poblems. Not too mention how many M3 are on the road w/out problems and that don't post on a forum at all. I think you're exaggerating the problem.

How about the blown engines that arent reported because their owners were asked or dont post on the foruns? There are by far more N55's on the road than the S65 yet there more documented cases of blown s65's.

I know of another case on bimmerfest that was reported only because BMW NA denied warranty on a blown engine and accused the good Dr of overreving his DCT causing the engine failure.
Most people sign the BMW release, get a new engine and keep quiet. The low production s65 has more catastrophic engine failures than the N54 .

Can someone explain what the NClass motors and their failure/lack of failure rate has to do with the S65?
