Seized Engine at 42k
I'm looking for advice. Here's the story.
Second owner of 2011 E90 M3 for 3 years. 42k miles, warranty ended last oct. While down shifting 2 weeks, using the DCT, I shifted twice when I should have only shifted once (twitchy fingers I guess). To add, this was on a 90degree corner on a downhill grade, at about 30 mph. Result --> the car died. Engine stopped, rolled to a stop. Car dead. Wouldn't even turn over. Flat bed to the dealer. Dropped the tranny to see what had seized --> you guessed it, the engine. BMWNA says it has been over-revved for a max of 30sec over lifespan of car. this I find hard to believe, but whatevs. I do believe it over-revved during my down shift though, however this was for maybe 1-2 seconds and it looks like it was up near 8000 rpm. Over-rev has nullified any assistance from BMWNA. They have offered me $5k as goodwill and dealer has offered me $15k for my shell. This $20k has to be put towards a BMW at the dealer. Plus I have to pay my diagnostic charges $3k. I'm currently finding out if the $$ can be put towards a CPO instead. An independent garage offered me $15k cash. So - I have till Monday to give the dealer an answer..... HELP!!! ADVISE!!! |

over rev a DCT? It won't allow you to downshift if it would bring you above the 8400 RPM cutoff in the lower gear you're attempting to shift into.
It honestly could have been a spun bearing though.

over rev on a DCT? Does not compute.

i think you can over rev the motor, in a sense of holding the engine at 8kRPM for a long time. That might be considered a over rev.

I always took an over rev as RPM's above the fuel cutoff limit associated with a manual transmission.

Oh, no.
I have a hard time believing the BS your dealer told you. First of all, DCT does not allow for any over-revs. Second, 8000 RPM is well within the rev-limits of the S65 engine, which redlines at 8400 RPM.

The repair bill of $15k sounds pretty fair for a new remanufactured engine. |

how do you over rev the dct? Does not make sense. Also 8,000 is within the redline of 8400. Not making any sense at all!

right, who hasn't redlined their car on occasion. This is fishy, I would fight it to get a better explaination. try calling BMWNA

1- DCT won't allow you to downshift to a lower gear...Never ! It would bring you above the 8200 RPM redline cutoff !
I noticed this I don't know how many times with my DCT ! In other words it just refused to downshift , so this situation is actually NOT possible ! 2- What is a redline with a rpm limiter ? And to what is it intented because our cars have it ? 3- Your BMW/Dealer really s@cks , and sounds like a smart idiot ! $ 3K for diagnostic only ? Probably he thinks he's a Bugatti/Dealer ? This situation is actually a joke !

seems as if looking for metal shavings in the oil would be one of the first things to do, not engine/trans separation.
This whole thing is a fishy as dead hooker in the trunk. |
