I have noise coming out of mine. Think I should take it in to get checked out?

Fuels (hydrocarbons) combine with oxygen in the air, burning (oxidizing) to form CO, CO2 and Water, mostly, but the combustion is rarely complete.
The black powder is mostly just carbon that hasn't combusted with O2 to form CO and CO2.

The guy asks a simple question and is verbally insulted. C'mon...
I'm willing to bet most people actually don't know the details behind the process that leaves carbon deposits in and around our exhausts.

I'd also like to know the answer to that. I've been trying Never Dull on the outside of my pipes, but nothing I've tried yet seems to get the carbon off the ends of them. |

It's a car exhaust. WTF is so hard for anyone over the age of 4 to understand about what is going to be in the area of the exhaust. Exhaust. Not knowing the chemical properties or reactions involved doesn't mean it's a question for anyone but a simpleton. Or a troll. I'd get the same insults and berating if I asked a similar question. Let me show you a few: What are the specks of things on the front bumper after driving? What are the stone-like things on my tire tread? When it rains, why is there dirt on my windshield in the areas not wiped? When I pore water on my car, why does it get wet? Being from Oman, I'd almost give him credit for a lanquage issue but his English seems better than many of my neighbors so I don't think that's it. He didn't ask how to clean it. He didn't ask how to make it less or more. He asked what was making the area of his exhaust black. Now, if he posts a picture of the entire rearend coated in oil residue, I'll feel really bad as we sort out that he's got a differential leak, or is burning HUGE amounts of oil.

I don't know if the OP is trolling... He is from Oman and he misspelled pow(d)er which obviously resulted in an interesting title!

I think that the OP is asking why the E9x M3 exhausts shows so much black powder residue in the exhaust tips compared to other cars from 2003 and back...
Sometimes it is not just powder, but a black paste. The answer could be the changes in emission laws after 2004, the reduction of sulfur from gasoline, the Phase II LEV standards, chemical composition of the new catalytic converters, new cold start procedures for the rapid warm up of those cats, and so on. The fact is that having this much black powder residue was not that common in most cars before 2004. It really looks like the engine is burning oil in excess. For sure, my 2004 E46 M3 exhaust tips did not have this much -if any that I can remember- black powder residue, but my 2007 VW GTI did and a lot. That GTI was my first car that I had to be cleaning the exhausts tips this much at the same time as washing it, that never happened before. My old 2008 Passat and my current 2010 CC also show this concentrated black paste in the exhausts. |
