No difference at all as far as I know. There is no such thing as a year.??? the cars are build and the year as well as the month that the car roles off the assembly line is shown on the name plate. Like in my case it was October 2012.
Would that make it 2012.83.333333 ? Who cares anyway

There are some differences in the iDrive system. My early 2011 does not have bluetooth music streaming, BMW apps, etc... while late 2011 models do. Also the iPod/iPhone connection can use a regular iPhone cable and does not need the weird BMW Y cable. There may be other differences.
Nothing different about the performance. |

It's cooler to say 2011.75 than 2011 because it means it's newer... True story.
Seriously, it's a dick size thing... It's a fact that 2011.75 owners have a bigger dick than someone who owns a 2011.014578292.

Actually it's a reflection on the equipment the car is sold with.
2011 (March 2010) - LCI (and ZCP option) 2011.5 (Sept 2010) - standard bluetooth (6FL) and combox, mineral white, manuals seat option, standard mdrive (incl. MDM), and *allegedly* DCT software changes. 2011.75 (March 2011) - above plus apps (6NR), start/stop, and two tone interior w/ speedcloth (not sure if this is the same in US; but you get cloth on the doors now) Makes a difference when you're going to sell it, so people are aware of what you have. So it's actually more about accuracy than e-dick swinging. In Canada, 2011.75 is effectively 2012 in spec.

I almost got into an internet brawl with a guy on here over this very topic. I used to use that ".75" sh!t too, 'til I came to my senses and realized it was ridiculous. I certainly realize there were changes in content/equipment but they're all 2011's.

It's a designation as to what option level or base in MY2011 which had a broad manufacturing window and updates/changes along the way. If MY2012 sees no changes during the production run it will retain the simple 2012 moniker instead of 2012.XX.

If I am selling my car, I'm going to list every single detail about the car regardless of the model year.
I'm not going to put an ad up with 2011.75 and leave it at that, because 95% of the people checking it out won't have the slightest idea wtf that means. It's an e-peen thing...

Conversely, the 2010 model year lasted about six months.

It is? Really? So none of the above items convince you hey?
Remember the E46? All that changed in 2003.5 was LED tail lights and trunk handle.. and yet.. a significant number of sellers are sure to specify this detail, as it can tell you who has legitimate OEM tail lights and who has garbage Depo or Eagle Eye. Some buyers who educate themselves using many of the easily google'able sites probably will look at the 2003.5 before the 2003. When I sold my '03 PY M3, I had about every third email asking if it was 2003 or 2003.5. So do what you want but I'll be taking every advantage possible when it comes time to selling, regardless of "e-peen" size. Let's say someone is interested in mine, and a competing 2011 comes up who doesn't take pictures of his door panels. If the buyer wants speed cloth on the doors, they will need to find a 2011.75 (at least in Canada).

The overwhelming majority have no idea... If you tell them "my car is a model 2011.5" they will look at you like you're crazy. When do people actually talk like that? When you go to a dealer, do they tell you the car is a 2011.75 or a 2011? 2012? I've only ever seen the "2011.XX" used on this forum.

Listen, I don't physically tell people it's a 11.75. But you can bet that when I sell it, or speak about it on, say an enthusiast site, that I'll refer to it as such.

In my experience, a lot of people can't be bothered to do anything on their own, and can't be bothered to do the research either.
Just going to agree to disagree... Missed your edit, but sure selling it on an enthusiast site I can see putting that info there, because people know... Other places, not so much...

Years from now the next wave of e9X M3 buyers are going to be sensitive to things like CIC, ZCP, Combobox and BMW Apps. Some of the MY conventions will help them navigate through those waters.
