I think OP was just telling the guy it is not M, which is not. It is what it is, and it is NOT what it is NOT.
IF someone has a delusion that their Body Kit Pontiac Fiero is a Ferrari, and knowingly or unknowingly telling people in the public that they drive a Ferrari it ridiculous.

I am glad that there are not as many stupid delusional posers in BMW community relative to non-AMG MB owners thinking that they are driving an AMG.

At the end of the day, we are all a bunch of BMW lovers. That sense of superiority behind the M wheel really should be tempered slightly. These days, the difference between M and non M is eroding fast.
Well said and you make sensible points regarding BMW's attempts to muddy the water and market to buyers. For clarity - I never said to the guy, "I own a M and you don't". That topic never came up, and it was not my attempt to "put him in his place". And believe me, if he had drove up in a Lambo with a M badge, I would have said the same thing...but I would have gotten a closer look to confirm

You should have just asked him how he got a pre-production M2.

The manufacturers needs to distinguish what M, AMG, and other things are. It has "M" Wheel. It has "AMG" sport package. It doesn't mean it is M or AMG vehicle...

I had an idiot taekwondo master who thinks his E430 was AMG, because his wheel came with AMG.
Except the taekwondo master whooped your ass when you insulted his "AMG"...

People buy cars for various reasons. The E93 M3 is a really enjoyable and great vehicle, but in this thread, whether or not a car is a "real" M deserving of a badge clearly mattered to the OP. The e93 really should have been an "M-sport" car instead of a full on M.

What does the M badge stand for? Motorsport. What do motorsports imply? Excellent driving dynamics, decent straight line speed, performance around a track, low curb weight, and independent parts from the base line of the model.

Let's take a look at the e93 compared to the e92 m3. The e93 has different bodywork, chassis, higher curb weight, slower acceleration, worse performance around a track, different suspension components, and worse driving dynamics. The biggest thing that the cars share is the motor and transmission. This is important, but only part of the total package. If you drop a S65 and DCT into a bobcat bulldozer, nobody is going to call it a M car. If you really think about it, a E93 is an entirely different car with "a few M parts."

Now let's look at the M235i. Does it have great driving dynamics, straight line speed, track performance, low weight? Yes it does. All of them are better than the e93 M3 in fact. So what really is the difference between an e93 and a M235i? Pretty much the only thing you could argue that makes the e93 deserving of the M badge is the independent powertrain from the base model. But the M235i has various independent parts as well - including a LSD, suspension components, etc. And whether you like it or not, it is badged as a M235i - not a "M-sport" 235i.

Is the M235i as much of a M car as a e92 M3? Nope, not in my opinion. But is it more of a real M car than a e93? All day and every day, in every metric that counts (except sound).

Unless of course, you only bought the car for a badge.
But, not this^.

Hmmmm Bigger brakes, aero treatments, LSD, powerful motor, upgraded suspension - isn't that the premise of the original E30 and E28 M cars?

I could care less if the owner thinks it's a pedigree ///M, but what would bother me is if the dealer sold it under that marque and made the owner believe in such things.

I am willing to bet that when the M2 comes out it will be just slightly more power, contain many similar components as the M235, a bit more aero treatment with a much higher price tag.

No, it was at my kid's friend's bday party.
Only thing it happened was, we all look at the back just to make sure it was or wasn't AMG, and we all laughed while he was showing his powder coated "AMG"
wheel on E430. LOL

So this happened as well today. One of the most blatant rebadge I have seen.

The owner went for a full X5M rebadge on a brand new $80k Suv. I actually sat outside watching the car from the comfort of my M3 as I wanted to see who would do something like that, but I got bored and left before he came out.

Now, regarding the M3 vs M235i. I have both cars, and the best way to put it is that the M235i is fun to drive, but the m3 is exhilarating. While the m235i is fast, handles great, etc it lacks that special something that we all love about our cars.

Great - Now I am a douche prick on 2 forums....

There is an active thread on E90 discussing a members decision to purchase a E90 M3 vs a M235...several interesting points and perspective.

How's this for perspective - I attended an after hours event at one of the local BMW Dealerships last night and noticed that 2 out of the 5 cars in the showroom were littered with M Performance parts and badging and such. Certainly adds the bling to the standard models, but it does give me pause to think that some people unfamiliar with the marque may truly believe they own an M car. I don't think OP was malicious in any way. I think we all have to remember that 99% of drivers out there have no idea what they are driving (including may M, AMG and R drivers) - folks on forums like these have that passion and therefore get more sensitive than most.
