I'm no mechanical engineer, but this does not look right.

Can't say I have ever seen it, and I have done a lot of bearings over the years. I have always, and was taught, to keep the backside of the bearings as clean and as dry as possible.

Wakesurfer that looks really odd. I would not coat the bearings with anything experimental on either side. Some assembly lube on the crank side, that's it.

Yup that's what RVS does, it coats the worn friction areas with a glass like coating that's hard to see but easily felt. Just had a friend in Finland with a similar experience when he did his E46 M3s bearings.

Warning to all BE Bearing customers: if you do this, you will void your BE Bearings warranty.

I would like to tell some words about my experience with BE. I had some additional questions about my set of rod bearings, and due to Bert and his team we solved all this questions very quickly! One more m3e92 drives safely!

Respect fo Bert, he is professional in his field!

Wow! They were really bad!!

Wakesurfer
You shouldn't put anything on the back (outside) of the bearing, it should be clean and dry to help it grip the rod.

Btw, looks like normal lithium grease to me , of course looks doesn't always mean much!

Yeah that was a mistake....looks like we did it wrong by putting grease on backside of bearing...didn't know... so it is what it is...hopefully I won't have any problems...my luck it will go catastrophicly...

How many "break in" miles do you guys usually give a new set of bearings??

A proper install doesn't require a break in period as there isn't anything to seat. With that said you, would be wise to drive carefully for some duration of time just to make sure everything is put back together properly. Also, does that grease you used need to be flushed out at some point?
I've never seen anyone put grease on the back of a shell before.

Snake oil... that goop will get washed away in seconds. Hopefully it is cheap.

Reminds me of dura lube...

Hope she works out ok.

I do wish him the best although I'm not really sure where the idea came from to butter both sides to that extent. It's not a grilled cheese.

edit:
That is one heck of a product. It is able to determine inside the engine which surfaces have been worn and only bond to those surfaces and not attach to any surface which hasn't been worn.

I too had to find the website and see what it was all about. Another engine overhaul in a can product.

Wakesurfer My bearing swap was last Thursday and I left for a 3 hour drive to the GA mountains on Saturday morning. I have been carving around mountain roads since and will be all week. That is my break in period. Took it easy for the first hour to make sure there was no leaks squeaks or ticks, and then cut loose.

Yup...got it..mistake to grease both sides...won't happen again🤣

Dcp2u- Good information thank you...GA mountain roads are so fun! I'm not to far from there...we have some decent ones in your neighboring state😁

So i get the fact everyone can say it's snake oil or whatever bullshit product...i would have said the same thing...but i tow my my track car (r53 mini)with an old 2010 tundra 210k miles. The trans got a TERRIBLE torque converter shutter at about 190k- serviced trans, —minor and I mean MINOR improvement. Drive 2500 miles, bought RVS trans additive re serviced the whole thing fluid and filter + additive. It's never made the shutter again...not once in 15k miles and I'm not easy on vehicles...and the 1hr+ road the track I go to isn't flat..it towed it fine..light little car or not.
I'm mailing them my bearings to examine further...I have it in my 535 too... putting it in my 325ic we are restoring...the mini too.

Untrue that bearings don't wear in. Though you're right that the process shouldn't take long.

Baaaah, there is no break in of Babbitt bearings. A micrometer is 1/1,000,000 of a m.

0.001" is 25.4 micrometers. Just drive the damn car.

I know we've had this conversation before, but my memory isn't great!

Is it this section you're referring to?

Where the maximum permissible engine rpm is nmax, the following
running-in programme has been established:
Step 1 1 min 1/3 nmax
Step 2 1 min 1/4 nmax
Step 3 1 min 1/2 nmax
Step 4 1 min 1/3 nmax
During running-in, the engine performance should not exceed
15 to 20% of maximum load.

So for the S65 (8300 RPM max) that's ~2800, ~2100, 4150, ~2800 RPM, 4 minutes all in (unless my maths have badly failed me! lol).
I think the ~200 miles I drove to my mothers and some local driving has more than covered that (kept it below 4k RPM).

Correct.

Not that anyone reading this should assume that's gospel. I'm sure it's just rule-of-thumb stuff. On the flip side, Glyco makes pretty much every kind of bearing, so something like it is probably applicable to most if not all bearings out there.

Either way, the point is that to blow off rod bearing break-in entirely is an overstatement at best.
