Then I have to assume that the 74mm reference for the M Performance exhaust is inaccurate. I know tip diameters are mostly meaningless, but I wouldn't understand how BMW would commission smaller tips when bigger is generally perceived to be better when it comes to aftermarket exhausts.

Doesn't sound bad. From the poor quality welds, I am assuming it's a pre-production unit. Still the craftsmanship seems extremely poor compared to the Akrapovic and many aftermarket exhausts. That's quite disappointing coming from M.

Same as the original dealer price, but it looks like the MSRP might have gone up (unless my memory is off). That means it'll go for $3,500 from vendors.

i kind of hope the final production is better.. i don't think that is the final product. if it is..that is a little sad.
Would they add some new connecting pipes with that price? possibly? |

This was a joke right? You cant be serious.

The M3 is less focused and more of a production car that has to appeal to a wider audience. It only makes sense that BMW doesnt make it too loud.

The M is supposed to be special in my eyes. If you want a production car, BMW has plenty of offerings. The M is a production car sent through the Motorsport division for a high performance bitch slap and a kick ass exhaust should be part of that..... BMW is just throwing the M on any car now for a marketing tool and it kills the exclusivity. I love my car but I think BMW is focusing on marketing instead of the days they were into building the Ultimate driving machine and letting that fact sell the car instead of the fact it has a "M" on the back of it.

It is made of a different material. Stock exhaust is primarily stainless steel. M Performance exhaust is Inconel and titanium.

Just curious, have we confirmed that? As mentioned before, there are lots of high carbon steels that fit the description of the material. Judging by the heat marks left by the welds, it looks like MiG welds, which are not appropriate for Ti or Iconel. (you need to TiG Titanium)

Could still be inconel, the heat discoloration around the welds certainly look like the welds on inconel I've worked with, and a TIG weld isn't necessarily always machine-weld pretty, especially if the substrate is even a little bit dirty. The welds on that exhaust look very much like a hand-done TIG on thin-gauge material. It's easy to lay a bead down by hand like a stack of dimes on their side if everything is clean and 1/8+ thick, not so easy if the can is thin material (which it probably is, that's the whole point of using inconel on an exhaust, use a thinner material without sacrificing strength).
