I've never had noticeable oil consumption using any oil, including the 5W50s. I've been running BE bearings since I got the engine.

That clunk is very worrying!

If you want to try something new about the start up clunk, give it a start without fuel pump fuse first. Maybe the oil will have extra time to fill up the vanos gallery.

These days I mainly run Red Line. Oil consumption has been pretty reasonable, around 1 quart every 3K - 4K miles, and that includes a little bit of oil weeping.

My oil change interval is only about 2.5K to 3K miles anyway, so consumption has never really been a concern.

FWIW, I also run E85, so I'm changing the oil more frequently regardless because of fuel dilution. I also prefer oils with a higher ZDDP content for the added wear protection due to running E85. I am also on BE Bearings.

Currently debating a RB refresh with ACL mix/match sets from Mporium.

Interesting stuff.
One point though, I wouldn't run 15w50 if I were you, that oil will be thicker when the engine's cold & will take longer to circulate.

Just daily drive the car , and you won't get the S65 clunk and rattle noises anymore (!) My car is a garage queen , that's why I always got it .
If I drive my car 2-3 times/week , the clunk noise is completely gone ..
Just test it out , and you will see..


After all those years, I saw for once that the clunk noise is been fixed by replacing the S65 Vanos Gears .
It was a BMW PUMA case and it was posted on this forum , as you can see and read ...

I remember that one now that you mentioned it, good to know they seem to keep going on fine despite the heavy clank/clunk! lol.
My M3's always been a garage queen, I couldn't really afford to daily it, hence having a 330d too. Also, I tend to not to drive at all from Monday to Thursday night .
It's weird how the clunk doesn't always happen though, I only drove it just the week before!

been at it for 7 years on between 5W50 and 15w50. i live in socal, my garage is warm at 6am. It's also my daily. every. day.

Socal? Southern california? You have to remember that not everyone is from the US here .
What sort of temps do you get at 6am?

that was the entire point of me saying im from socal lol. you started with "I wouldn't run 15w50 if I were you"

so you assumed something did you not?

Even if your garage was at 30C, that's still cold in terms of engine temp, and running 15w will still take longer to circulate than 10w or 5w. I don't see why you're taking that chance when you have 5w50 available.

SoCal is an abbreviation for Southern California often used in American vernacular. I see this information below in the E9X M3 Owner's Manual.

I believe this would do the trick. I consider this an oil issue and building the pressure by cranking would most likely reaolve this.
