But why would they bother with a cosmetic item that no regular driver is going to see?
They're not going to spend money for nothing.

Like Ajolives (and I said earlier), they're there to stop the springs from slowly creeping off (with very little force).
We have had at least a few cases where the covers have broken up and the springs have crept out and ended up wearing into or through the cam covers.

The covers broke because the spring broke them. They won’t stop spring movement. I’ll put money on it. They’re brittle with age and heat cycles. BMW does all sorts of stupidly engineered things like the oil filter housings.

They will stop it when they're not old, brittle and weak. You've given the explanation as to why they break yourself . How many have you seen reported failing when a car was less than 10 years old say? (which will be a while ago of course with these).
And I totally agree about the stupid engineering point! Many (all?) manufactures do that at some point, some more than others!
