This is a good reminder, FCP price for injectors went down:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...h-0280158164kt

<$300 per set right now. Previously I saw prices over $600.
At this price it makes sense to replace them vs paying $20-30/each to get them cleaned and tested.

Sorry to hear about the ops loss. Hopefully it all works out soon.

Why are there these 2011's with blown engines from stuck injectors? Was there a bad run? Is this a bigger problem and other years should be replacing injectors?

Wtf is this now. I just did my RBs, and mine is a 11' e90. For years I knew about RBs being the most known catastrophic failure item. Now this???

If there is no indication of when the injectors fail or about to fail, what can we do?

Anyways, should the injector replacement be considered as important as the RBs now? Were there any abnormal sysmtoms for this, before it goes BOOM?

The injectors are just fine. The odd one fails... This can happen with any electronic injector in any car. There is no reason to run out and panic.

Exactly. It happens on Toyotas, Hondas and all reliable cars out there too

If tdott's prices are similar here in the UK, then yea fair enough, but somehow I doubt.

What I'd be interested to know is can injector testing see signs of this kind of failure? I know they test for injector spray pattern and dribble, but I don;t kn ow what else. Think I'll give SAS a call.....

Don't panic, it's only a tiny number atm

I had a set cleaned and tested (got some used injectors that were originally from a SC E92 that had 1200 miles on them then sat in a box for 5 years - this is when I was tracking down my pre-det issues...). They came back to me as 100% "perfect" from the injector shop. Installed them and suffered long crank issues if the car sat for a few minutes. Turns out, one of the injectors that passed at the shop actually leaks when hot.

So, I used a 9V battery, a tire valve stem and a can of throttle body cleaner to clean my old injectors and put them back in my car. They have been just fine and only have 68TKM on them.

There are no serviceable parts in these little guys. They should fail closed... But an unlucky few have had them fail open.

If your are really worried about the injectors, buy 1 injector a month for 8 months to lessen the sting and then change them.

Cheers,

Lol, I like that kind of fix!

Well I could afford to buy them in 1 go, but I don't want to being throwing money at it for nothing.
I forgot to ring SAS , so when I do I'll ask them if they do hot testing too.
Re injectors failing open being rare, roger that, I've been a car mechanic/tech for 25yrs, I've only ever heard of that on some VW diesels and in here! I've never worked on a car that's happened to, nor remember that being a job for any work mates. Guess I don't work on the 'right' cars!

I might buy the set from FCP for ~$300 and have my trusted Indy swap those out in the spring?
Bad idea or cheap peace of mind?

Or install errors.

Having a 2011 m3 $300 doesn't seem too bad for piece of mind.

Well since everyone is panic-buying everything, it makes sense to stock up on them as well!

This isnt a specified issue on a specific car but an injector is essentially an electromechanical part. alot of you guys have not had an n54 335i and it shows. injector failure isnt uncommon.

Aren't those direct injection? (M3s are indirect/port injection AFAIK, so less pressure).
If so, does that make them more prone to it? Or is it just the injectors in those cars?
Haven't newer 'revisions' of the injectors sorted out their problem?

Lmao!

Joking aside, I have been contemplating getting some myself if testing isn't conclusive, but that aside it does seem a tiny risk.......

There is an ongoing lawsuit pending against BMW. The law firm pushing it has been doing well, until a setback earlier this year:

"On May 29, 2020, a New Jersey court denied plaintiffs' motion for class certification in a class action filed against BMW in part because it found that plaintiffs had not proved there are at least 40 people who have paid to replace the engine rod bearings in their M3 vehicles, or that currently own an M3 vehicle with less than 120,000 miles. Plaintiffs' counsel know from their investigation that well over 40 people meet that criteria. The attorneys seeking reimbursement for the class of M3 owners now need your help to prove this case against BMW."

The law firm working this case is Goldman Scarlato & Penny PC, McCune Wright Arevalo LLP, and Thorsnes Bartolotta McGuire LLP.

Anyone who has experienced rod bearing failure OR has paid to avoid rb failure as a preventative measure, should fill out this form to help this law firm kick ass.

You ought to post both the above posts in the 'rod bearing condition thread' and the 'blown motors registry' thread and create a new thread for it yourself (if you haven't already).
In the former thread their are over 300 posts of people posting photos of the rod bearings they've had changed over the past ~4.5yrs. The overwhelming majority of which are excessively worn (to varying degrees). I posted a summary here largely based on technical information from the bearing manufacturers (which I've linked there).
In the latter thread 69 owners stated their engine's failed due to failed rod bearings, only some were replaced under warrantee. (A further 16 engine failures are likely or suspected due to rod bearings failure).
In addition 20 owners stated their engine's failed due to main bearing failures, whilst some of those were supercharged, not all were.
Also their were another 63 engine failures from other causes, or of undetermined causes.
