I'm confused by that VI too. It's not much higher than RL 5w40 and HTHS is 5.08 same as the Redline 5w50, which has a VI in the 180's. There's a BITOG thread from a looong time ago where Schaeffer's rep says it's a 50/50 PAO/Group III oil, maybe that explains it if the Redline oils are 100% PAO? No idea. All it means is it's more different at low temps than high temps than the RL oils

Not sure if it was covered here, but how much difference will a magnetic oil drain plug make if I were to do a comparison?

What oil were you using prior to the 0w40? BMW 10w-60? Several guys have reported lower lead counts once they moved to thinner oil.

Fantana, is this the new M1 0W40 "FS"? or the older version? Judging on the lower viscosity and the higher boron, I'm gonna assume FS.

Just got my oil report done. 08 E90 with 59k miles on it. Full exhaust and MS intake are the only mods done to the motor. Good to see even the early gen E90 is still doing well.

It would probably reduce certain particulate counts.

Probably a dumb question but I'm waiting on my new to 2011 to get here with 60k on it. They changed the oil last week so it hasn't been ran very much but this was a Ford dealer so I have no clue if they used the right oil. So I'll be doing an oil change so I know for sure. If I pull a sample will it even show anything if there's an issue lingering? I'm guessing no but figured I'd ask anyway

Probably not worth paying for a test except to find out whether they used oil with about the right properties; oil hasn't been in there enough to accumulate any wear metals

Yeah, 10w60 on my first report and Castrol 0w40 on the second. Then 3rd I went to Mobil 1 0w40. I'm going to stick with Mobil 1 forever now.

Doubtful, unless there was some huge coolant or fuel contamination problem.

Blackstone should be able to ballpark the oil viscosity that's in there, and based on various additive readings, you could probably figure out the exact oil that was used.

I'm just going to change the oil and filter on Saturday. I've got a buddy at local BMW shop that's going to do that, take a look at seeing dct pan and give it a once over. I'll wait till next oil change to do a Blackstone lab.

What BMW specifies: the 10w60 oil. You can run the BMW branded 10w60 (made by Shell/Pennzoil) or one of many others from companies like Castrol or Lubro-Moly.

There are literally thousands of M3s running around with that oil right now without any problems, and they have been doing so for nearly a decade.

Sent in my first lab analysis since I took over the car. It's got some history already which is awesome. I did go about 1,000 over the intervals it has done before so levels are little off but I'm pretty happy with them overall. I did fucked up and put the wrong oil that was in the car. I put Mobil 0w/40 for this first oil change under me. I think it still had the Shell 10w/60. But anyways, we'll see how she turns out at about 80k.

Stock everything too, she has test pipes and both engine and dct tunes. She's a daily, not pushed crazy hard, get about an an avg of 19.5mpg, let her sit for a min before moving and warm up to green in the info screen before reving pass 4K. We'll see how the next oil change is on the 0w40.

From the latest Blackstone oil sample:

"The vast majority of wear metals look great at 107,738 miles, but nickel is a bit high. Typically, we don't pay a whole lot of attention to nickel as it's normally just an alloying metal or perhaps a coating of some sort, but the S65 normally doesn't leave a whole lot of nickel in the oil, so this 5 ppm does stick out. That said, the other metals, including lead from the bearings, look great, so let's just wait and see how nickel looks next time. After all, 5 ppm is not a lot of metal in the grand scheme of things. The TBN is fine at 5.3. Good report overall."

What's the feedback on nickel content for our S65 engines?
