Almost ran out of gas
I forgot to get gas last week - I had a long weekend and was running late this morning - got stuck in traffic, and had the trip computer drop down to showing 1 mile left by the time I got to the gas station. It took 16.83 gallons to fill up according to the pump which is more than the tank is supposed to hold - I assume the filler neck holds a bit of fuel too. Anyway, I left with around 22 miles showing, and the station is only about 10 miles away in mixed driving so I wasn't too worried. Unfortunately that 22 miles was optimistic and based on highway driving. I was in stop and go traffic and near the end of my trip had to stop for several red light cycles so the computer jumped around a quite bit - It dropped from 5 miles left to 1 mile left in just the last mile. At that point I was starting to sweat a little. I know it's not a good idea, I know about debris in the bottom of the tank and cooling the fuel pump - I didn't plan it and I'll probably never forget again after this. Just thought I'd share.

Some herein swear that the readout is erroneous and you had no reason to worry about running out of fuel.
Glad you didn't get to stuck on the side of the road. Remember to fill up.

Good to hear you were able to make it. Running out of gas usually gets a man sodomized in the bathroom of a biker bar....according to movies that I watch.
On a lighter note, I heard it was bad for the fuel pump to run your fuel this loan.

4 BMWs and a couple of hundred thousand miles and I've managed to only run out once in my 528iT sport. Got stuck between a long stretch of exits with no stations, and ran out just as I exited 100 yards from a station.
The "miles til empty" was pretty accurate, but afforded me 3 or 4 miles when the count was at -- --. Will never forget it, so I fill when at 1/4.

Its never good to allow the fuel level to drop below an 1/8 of a tank... It periodically introduces air into the fuel pump which can quickly overheat the pump... If you do this frequently, you will cut the lifespan of fuel pump down considerably...
I burned up my fuel pump rather quickly on my E46 M3 from consistently driving it on a low tank of gas frequently due to heavy Atlanta traffic... The sediment that collects in the bottom of the tank isn't nearly as damaging as introducing air into the pump because there is a bag type filter mesh around the inlet of the fuel pump that stop debris from getting into the pump and gas line... It does not, however, stop air from getting into the line... When you are very low on gas, it does not take much horizontal G-force to slosh the fuel to one side of the tank- which allows the inlet of the pump to suck in air for brief moments and the pump loses its lubrication which is the fuel itself... Once in a while is no problem, but frequent occurences will kill your pump pretty quick... |
