DCT lower pan gasket leak out of warranty

Heard back from the dealer, apparently the dct is leaking all over the place (top, side, bottom), and they need to drop it completely to replace the seals. Quoted 4300 for the repair Orz... they are still talking with BMW for the potential warrenty coverage. Really hoping it can be covered. The car is currently at 51300 miles and has 1 month left till its 4th birthday.

I'd fight hard to get BMW to pay that Edward. BMW are obviously well aware of the issue - their design failure - but I'd pull a few links to make the dealer understand as well.

Same, they were able to do it for me even though I was the car's 2nd owner and I was quoted around ~2.5k, but I only had two seals that needed to be replaced. I paid out of pocket for the additional seal for preventative maintenance.

Called BMW NA today and they were surprised at the estimate and asked for a few days to talk with the dealer. But it seems they are willing to pick up the bill if they can sort through the technical details with SA.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Interesting, I did not get the detail parts breakdown. But from the invoice, it says "found multiple transmission leaks, mechatronics electrical connector, heat exchanger pressure hoses, side and lower oil pans." I don't see any fluid on the ground so I am a bit surprised at so many places are leaking.. I wonder how many people have leaky DCT that they just don't realize.

I just saw your post, and BMWNA representative I talked to definitely seems to be familiar with DCT leakage. I wonder if there's any internal dealer memo about this.

I didn't realize it until it soaked through the felt cover just below the pan and started leaving a trail of tears when I backed out of the driveway in the morning. It didn't do it all the time either, but I knew from the mineral oil smell that it wasn't good. I was more than pleased with BMWNA's response to the issue though and it was resolved quickly. I'm glad they seem to be doing the same for you!

It seems bmwna will not be covering the repair, because I bought the vehicle from east coast a month ago. Even though when I bought it it only had 50900 miles... I filed a formal complaint since DCT should not be leaking all over the place on a 51k miles 3.8 year old car. I am going to check with indy shops to see if they had any experience working on m3 dct.

Maybe that's why the DCT fluid is lifetime - because it will leak out by 50,000 mikes and the transmission will have to be refilled. LOL.

Haha, now we're coming close to some wierd logic!

OP, keep hassling them. If you're would be one of a handful yes, but as every second DCT (or more!) seem to have the leak it simply isn't fair to not look after the customer. Other than the leak I personally have complete confidence in this box' reliability and operation but again paying this fix should be on BMW.

OP as stated before, my indy BMW shop was able to repair it for about $1200 by not having to drop the entire transmission. Parts is about half that cost.

Did that price include the seal on the top? I thought the transmission had to be dropped for the top one?

They replaced the bottom and side pan gaskets which are the only ones I am aware of.

I think the top leak is from hose fittings

Nice. I am getting an estimate on Monday and I suspect local BMW dealer over quoted me on the estimate thinking BMWNA would cover it.

Hi Edward, for the side (mech) and top (oil cooler in/out plumbing) the box has to be dropped which include a load of work as exhaust etc also has to go. Mine had a leak on the top, I'll send you some pictures when Im back as I don't see how to post from my phone. (or if you pm me your mail address.)

Pm'ed. My car will need Mech side gasket, 2 oil cooler hoses and lower pan replaced. The local dealer is quoting me 14.5 hours because transmission needs to be fully dropped. Btw, for the top leak, what did you replace? Just the 2 hoses?

I can check part details when I'm back home. The way I remember it they changed all 3 side sealings together with both suck/pressure filters + new fluid. Again the last bit is what failed and resulted in a new box...ah well all good in the end!
