DCT lower pan gasket leak out of warranty
Hi guys,
I am curious how much does it generally cost to fix DCT lower pan gasket leak problems in indy shops. The car is 2011 with 51k miles and out of warranty. When I talked to the SA, he recommended to replace the gasket, the pan and the side seals, which amount to 2.8k out of pocket. =S Is replacing side seals necessary and lower pan necessary? Thanks, Edward |

Had this done for the lower pan last year around 64k on my 08 E92 M3. My indy shop which is well-known and respected for their work on M's charged me about 700 for parts and 500 for labor. $1200 altogether.
My shop took a look at her a few weeks ago and noticed a very minor leak from the side pan but said to just keep an eye on it. Unless there are no obvious issues with your side pan, just get the lower pan replaced.

I had my lower pan/gasket and side gasket replaced under warranty. Generally, you'd want to replace the side gasket if it's leaking but depending who you talk to, they may need to lower the transmission. Also, all of the fasteners are torque-to-yield so they have to be replaced along with the gaskets. Add the cost of new DCT fluid, and the repair gets quite expensive. The dealer told me that my repair would have cost around $2K had I needed to pay out of pocket.

The side pan showed some minor leaking a few weeks ago which they didn't notice when they had replaced the lower pan and gasket. They deemed it minor so as to not require repair/replacement. They recommended to just keep an eye on it.

Are you sure it is just the lower pan gasket? My indie shop was able to replace both for about $1200 as well. They did not have to drop the entire trans which is what cut costs down. I would look around your area for a shop familiar with M3's before going to the dealer. If one is leaking, I would recommend doing both just to be safe.

I had this done and I was just out of warranty too when it happened. I had the repair covered under goodwill, though - I called up BMW USA and had it taken care of within a couple days. Was done by the dealership at no cost to me.

Wow thats a lot for just the lower pan since that does not require dropping the trans.
The side does need the trans dropped and while youre there, should just replace the top as well. |

Agree, as this very clearly is a design failure my opinion is that BMW should pick up the bill. They have passed the stage since looong when they could claim the DCT leak is anything else but a mistake on their side.
Good luck OP. Ps. Mine was done at 20k miles, some even earlier so again clearly a failure. |

Mine is 900 miles out of warranty and 2 months till its 4th birthday. How likely do you think the local dealer will goodwill the repair? I have never done it before and not sure how it's usually done? |

Got it. Also for the fluid replacement, it seems they won't be replacing all the fluid. Is that normal/good?

Depends on how knowledgeable your SA is... For any vehicle that may be outta warranty by miles(under 10k from 50k mark), but still under by time can still qualify for 100% factory coverage. Talk to your SA about that
