Example of mass bearing hysteria

I'm sure many of you read Jalopnik, and a popular post on there is a "You could buy this expensive used car for the price of a new Accord!"

Today's post featured a red E92 with 110,000 miles on it:

To which many haters came out and said "BEARINGS, STAY AWAY!" It irked me so much that I went and responded in the comments about how it's a small amount of cars, many factors go into it, every car has an it's own issues..but it's like talking to a wall.

Maybe because I bought mine new, and it is a post LCI, I feel my chances are ok for bearing issues. But even if considering a used one, if I really wanted it, I'd just factor in the additional cost of changing out the bearing when I bought it. What's the job, an additional 2,500$, give or take?

Why is this car different than an RS4 with its timing chain? Or Porsche with it's IMS issue.

I think I'll go drive through a tunnel windows down now...

IMO, this engine is a ticking time bomb. I secretly wish I had bought that 997 I was cross-shopping.

We can post individual cars here and argue about the bearings all day long but at the end of the day, whether you bought it brand new in '13 or it's an '08, whether you have 1000 miles or 110,000 miles, you just can't say you are absolutely 100.0% confident that you are exempt from the bearing issue. And if you do then more power to you but don't come crying if one day you are staring at a $25k repair bill.

Like I say in every bearing thread, I'm going to drive mine with a peace of mind for 2 more years but come April of 2017 when my CPO runs out, I'll be making an appointment with a reputable shop to get my bearings done first thing. But hey, call me paranoid.

I called Beverly Hills Porsche. They said the 997 and 991 platforms haven't had any bearing issues. AT ALL. Thanks, BMW. #costcutting #cuttingcorners

This worrying about a ticking time bomb issue is reg*dd**mdiculous. Its no different than saying driving in traffic is a ticking time bomb because accidents happen.

The percentage of car failures is very very low. Take out supercharged and tracked cars and it is probably less than 2 or even 1%. If you are out of warranty and plan on going long term, spend the $2,500 and get the replaced. Otherwise relax.

If you feel your engine is a ticking time bomb, then its time to sell your car. I enjoy my M3 hassle free, stress free. Its under warranty. This is how a expensive performance car should be. I wouldnt want to worry about my engine blowing, then i have to shell out 10k+ . Unless i was modded and was ready to take on the risk.

I guess its the price people pay when buying used out of warranty M3s.

Everyone on M3post should look at selling their M3 asap. Everyone can probably trade in for the new M4 which should be way more fun and reliable now that the HPFP issue seems resolved.

I believe, at least for the IMS issue, there are permanent solutions for it using ceramic or oil-feeding. Until a solution for these few bearing issues are created, S65/85 owners will have to ride it out if they're bullish, or sell the car.

one more to add:

....or the C63 with its very well documented crankshaft issue.

I'll tell you why, b/c haters gonna hate. The M3 is the measure by which all sports sedans are based off. It's easy to knock the guy up top.

Ehh my biggest problems with the F80 is sound. I am also not in love with the looks, that doesnt mean i think the E92 looks better either. BUT if it had a twin turbo V8 like the C63, i would probably have gotten one over a stingray. So i wont say the F80 is a total no brainer. but if it works for you, its a great car.
