Absolutely, the dealership helped me out big time... They originally wanted me to pay almost $4k and got the price down to $2k...

BMW north America also left the door open after our conversation on the phone... BMWNA never stated that they denied the claim to me directly, but the service advisor at the BMW dealer stated that they denied it... When BMW called me the next day they said we are still working on it but they are leaning towards no "goodwill." No one will ever know I guess..

Truthfully, I wonder if BMW NA ate the difference behind the scenes for the dealership quietly and without disclosure to me...

$2000 is quite a decrease... But then again I am sure they found some savings in reusing some of the old parts rather than ordering new ones....?

either way, I walked away happily... Many thanks to people on this forum for advice!

I guess showing pictures of pulled bearings in decent condition is not going to support the illusion that every single M3 is on the verge of bearing failure and should have their bearings replaced post haste..
Except for the Maleks customer car of course.
It would certainly be more gratifying and settling to see more bearings in good shape once removed...

Then why did you make this thread? Obviously if they were as thorough as you state, then they should have known more than a non-engine builder like myself to check the main, and rod bearings, along with the pistons. So why ask if you should change your bearings?

Basic flawed logic. The cosmetic appearance of ANY vehicle part, has nothing to do with the probability of failure. What people on here enjoy taking pictures of is Thick bearings. When bearings are about to fail, they make noise. From the Gintani engine tear down videos you can see them move the bearing back and forth almost replicating this sound. The bearings themselves, both MAIN, and ROD, were wafer thin. And despite that, one of the engines hadn't failed at the time of the tear down.

ditto the above. I used to call it internet hysteria, but now I call it Alarmist Entertainment. I'm having fun coming up with new terms for the phenomenon.

What happened to you is certainly sad but rare. I would probably start thinking the same if this happened to me, so I understand your situation, and current mind set.

My original engine had not one single issue prior to the bearing failure... It purred like a kitten and pulled hard all the way to redline...

It's undetermined and still arguable to this day what the actual causes are to the bearing failure problem... Lubrication, tolerances on clearances, stacked tolerances, cold start wear, etc... It goes on and on... I don't know what caused my bearing to spin, but I do know that the bearing was the only problem I ever had with my car... Therefore, I am concerned with the bearings and their longevity... That is why I asked about the bearings...

There are still failures occurring to engines with the latest bearings, and I am just not 100 percent confident I trust even the new bearings...

Since you made that statement, can you please post exactly how many DIY bearing threads have been posted (with links, of course) and of those, how many you think don't seem to be faulty?

No. You just act like a troll and derail threads. There are maybe 3 or 4 guys who DIY their bearings and they were all in bad shape. So either you are making up things or you are reading a different forum

Jeez how many of you people are in RGs "the sky is falling, its raining broken M3s" choir.
OK to get you started here are six people who have had their bearing swopped and none showed imminent signs of failure. E92zero Rennwerks Scrippy, Pbonsalb 08 E92 jerez black Mikulski. There are others but I don't remember their usernames offhand - I'll add them if I do. Plus of course Maleks customer car.
Now if they look like squartus's bearings then that is a different story.
To be fair a couple of shops have put up a set of photo of bearings that aren't shot, notably:
dan@autocouture and eas
Compared to the majority of shop pictures:

You keep making up shit to suit your story. I searched every one of those names you listed and they all had excessive wear, and some were down to the copper. Maybe in your warped universe a bearing down to copper is considered in good shape and not at imminent risk of failure

Here are a couple - look OK to me but then I'm only comparing them to the opinion of Clevite when they were sent sets of bearings to examine with similar wear that they declared as normal.
You know Clevite, the people who manufacture bearings, the experts in the field who have already told RG that the accelerated wear patterns aren't due to insufficient rod bearing clearance.

If that's e92zero, he did them at 86k mi. You can see quite a bit of wear on them. Far less than most other cars, but by no means are they in pristine condition.

Indeed...but not about to fail...as was my point.

I have to say some of you clowns do get on my tits...where the hell were you guys when it was time to put your money where your mouth was, and make a contribution to RG for bearing parts to be bought for measurement.
Plenty good at flapping your gums, not so good at putting your hand in your pocket.
Troll indeed.

Are you talking to me? I did send him money. Did you? Or are you in the flapping gums camp?

Oh, and "not about to fail" is a subjective statement. We have no idea when engines decide to fail. There was a member who had an engine fail just 1000 miles after a pretty good oil analysis result. Another member heard ticking sounds and changed bearings, and when he pulled them out they had a lot less wear than many of the bearings we have seen.

What's interesting about this set of bearings are the clearances noted by each bearing. All listed at around .002"

The owner claimed his bearings were worn out and ticking, so had them replaced.

Those listed clearances are exactly what some people on this board claim is the optimum clearance. Strange eh?
