New Engine Finally In! Factory Reman...

16 miles on her so far...

The oil cap is different from the previous motor and that's about it... Hopefully it has the latest bearings... She sure looks pretty under the oil cap though... mmhmmm! shiny...

Could you recap your situation? Did BMW goodwill your repair and cover all costs? What year and mileage? Out of factory warranty?

I believe the latest BMW bearings are not what you want. They are the harder non-copper/lead ones.

Congrats on getting her back. Another break in is such a chore . And a perfect opportunity to start Blackstone analysis from mile 1. I just wish they could tell us how many miles on the block before refurb.

#6 Cylinder spun a rod bearing at 56k miles... Literally 1000 miles after a healthy blackstone report...

BMW NA denied any goodwill; however, it is likely they denied it because I have a 3rd party warranty with Premier Dealer Services, who covered 90% of the $20k bill...

I paid $2000 towards it to make up the difference...

I have a 1200 mile break-in period which sucks, but I am thankful to have a new engine all over again!

And two years, unlimited mileage, factory warranty on the engine...

I have not seen my car in two months until today since it spun a bearing on the way to work in April... It took the dealer a month to negotiate terms with my warranty company and then another month just to to get the engine ordered and installed...

Good to have her back in the garage!

From a business standpoint, I truly think that BMW perceives their bearing recall from the E46 generation M3 a financial mistake... I think they have simply made up their mind on the E92 M3 bearing situation as casualties of war... In other words, you are SOL if you are out of warranty...

3rd party warranty is the only way to cover your ass, and now I am starting to see many warranty companies that are denying coverage on E92 M3's because of this problem... It only takes 1 covered client and a $20k repair to cause them to reevaluate customers looking for warranty coverage for our cars...

I say change the bearings every 50k miles and you should be okay; if you make it 50k miles that is...

I agree 100%, and I know I don't know all the facts... but from a dealer standpoint (I'm a sales manager at a non bmw store and have been in the business for 10 yrs) , if it was me, and you bought the car and the ext warranty from my store, I would eat the deductible knowing even minus the $2K, I would still be ahead and have a damn good shot at having a customer for life. Or more likely, offer you the $2k towards a future purchase...or go to bat with the factory on your behalf. Again, I know that I don't know all the facts, and the dealer may have bent over backwards to get the lions share covered for you.

Sorry about your ordeal, but at 115K miles, I can only laugh at this statement.

You had previously asked a question regarding bearings, or any other part in a dealership reman. And from this comment, i'm not sure you're clear on the subject. If you think you are, then disregard and stop reading. If not, then.......

A reman part, typically the engine or trans, means that the dealership took out only the specific part that failed. After this, they reassembled the engine or trans, and put in brand new fluid. So as a person who's owned many cars, and had quite a few reman dealer parts, this is a fact. I personally now have much more faith in an engine from a wreck (The wrecked engine, has not previously failed), than a dealer reman. If the engine was from a wreck, and you were worried about the bearings, you could simply change whatever part will make you sleep well at night. So my advise is to ditch the car after the engine warranty ends.

What's wrong with you and your statement, yesterday you said nothing is wrong with our S65 and now OP needs to ditch a new/rebuilt engine ?
Yeah , probably it's only Internet Hysteria ...

Read carefully before responding power-belgium. OP has the dealer warranty on the engine, so no worries, until the warranty ends. A dealership remanufactured engine, is very different from a used engine, typically from say a wrecked car.

He is a troll who likes to derail bearing threads with nonsense. He thinks BMW put thick oil in the engine because it is "track focused"

I'm always agreed with your statements .
Don't know if you saw it.."I am the cause" why people changing bearings =>please read page 21 + 22 => http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...996069&page=22
Guy was banned 4-5 times and actually still is..
Imagine ! Some guys on here are just f@cking unbelievable..
But actually I'm agreed a lot of us just think on the after market value of our cars , and the threads of BF crush the value of our cars .
I'm going always for the truth and in public , and the truth is actually shocking !

BMW Re-manufactured engines are not engines that simply had the faulty parts replaced... You should know this...

One of my company's largest clients is BMW Financial Services as I work in the automotive wholesale business, where we sell their company cars...

Even their company cars have catastrophic engine failures from time to time and we install BMW re-manufactured engines in their cars before we sell them-straight from the factory, so I am thoroughly aware of how their re manufactured process works...

These engines are broken down and only undamaged components are assessed and every part goes through a thorough reapplication process including measured tolerances and honing if necessary... All the seals, including piston rings, bearings, gears, chains are new and even the block is stripped, cleaned, and repainted...

Ask any engine builder and they will tell you that this is essentially a new engine...

I fully trust that this engine was re-manufactured with likely more precision and a higher quality control standard than that of the original engine that came off the assembly line...

In fact, if it was not for the poor quality control standards of the original engine off the assembly then guys like me would have never had to worry about catastrophic bearing failure...

I don't think I would be laughing about this at 115k miles, but then again that's your opinion, albeit awkward as it is...

I am more interested in what your bearings look like at this point?

Judging by the pictures many of us have seen of bearings removed from cars with higher mileage, even less than yours, indicate that statistically the majority of all E92 M3's have shown through documented cases a substantial problem with premature bearing wear- with a smaller side effect of early bearing failure... It's not some internet frenzy, its fact...

Furthermore, if it was not for a very large trend of M3 owners getting superchargers installed on their cars we would have even less data to look at... In those cases, the owners discovered there was a problem when they had their bearings upgraded for boost, only to find that their old bearings were on the verge of disintegrating soon...

I know that none of us want to hear about failure, and I am hoping that my new engine gives me as much mileage and more than your car, but I will certainly be replacing the bearings every 50k miles for my own piece of mind...

It's like surfing in the ocean... Your chances of being bitten by a shark are far greater in the evening time, so I surf at noon...

Some additional details the OP left out was that the warranty company offered a used engine and instead he and the dealer negotiated for a BMW reman engine for 2k out of pocket. Several well regarded forum members gave solid advice about taking up on that offer.

Glad to see OP is back in the car and things ended up favorable. That warranty really paid off.

I'm glad you got your car sorted.
Regarding shop replaced bearings, its striking that essentially every single shop set pulled seem to be on the verge of failure yet the vast majority of diy pulled bearings are not.
I guess showing pictures of pulled bearings in decent condition is not going to support the illusion that every single M3 is on the verge of bearing failure and should have their bearings replaced post haste..
Except for the Maleks customer car of course.
