First I've heard of any relation to the auto start/stop. Can you elaborate?

A few cars in our area from the dealership had the function checked because there were 328 cars with new short blocks being needed already. The function had activated equivalent to 9 years worth of starting the car and the car was only 1.5 years old. The first year, not sure when they switched it had the function ON by default. In the later years it is only active in ECO mode and not normal or sport. That is the dumbest feature ever in a car, it serves no purpose but to wear parts out. In a perfect world on some test bench it saves gas but in the real world it saves nothing. The x5 v8 has a similar problem because of where things are mounted. The parts on the top end of the engine are taking a beating due to the stop/start option. For quite some time the dealership was turning the feature off on all cars and then they got yelled at so now it is a free option upon the customer request.

Yep
My gut knew it (auto SS) would be wrought with aggravated wear and tear. Turned off from day one in the '13 e92

Have you made the change to Redline 10w/40. I have been contemplating using this oil and would appreciate any feelings/thoughts. Thank You

I will finish wiring my oil pressure gauge in next day or two - I want to see what pressures I get with current TWS. Then I will do the oil change later this week/weekend and let you know. I've spoken to another engine builder who also recommended 10w40 over 10w60 |

Mine only took about a week or so after I mailed it in. Once they received it, they processed my sample in 2-3 days.

I just got the report back today.
Here it is below. Looks like no issues. 4000 miles with a half dozen autocross events, a track day at over 100 degrees F and daily commuting. Mobil 1 0w40 is holding up great (with about 2 quarts of REDLINE 10w60 mixed).

That's a good report! It's encouraging for people who have switched to 0W40 and wondered if it can hold up to track days.

This is the highest moly count I've seen in a UOA.

It could be a big ingredient in Redline 10w60.

Oh, shit, I was thinking TWS, lol. Thanks, that's probably it, lots of Redline's line has moly.

Reading through this thread and the UOA thread it got me thinking...is anyone running a M1 0w40 and 15w50 mix? It's been mentioned a few times in this thread but is anyone doing it?
Was thinking that adding a few qts of the 15w50, maybe a 75/25% mix 0w40 to 15w50, would add some protection at operating temp while still flowing very well during cold starts. Perhaps this could reduce the higher iron ppm count we tend to see in 0w40 UOAs. |

All 5-50s on the market are a compromise, they have a higher level of friction modifiers to make the swing that great. Better off sticking with a 15-50 and mixing it, or some 10-60. It is not junk, but there are better choices.

ZK, fantastic results. Looks like you'll be sleeping well at night!
Next up, me with a side-by-side-by-side of old TWS and Castrol Edge Pro and with M1 for comparison. |

Why do you think you need to do that? What's wrong with straight M1 0w40 or TWS?

Thought maybe a combination such as this would provide better operating temp protection while still providing excellent cold start flow and was curious to hear opinions from some of the experts on here. |
