Every 7.5K, by which time I've probably had 6 track days or so. I've generally read that oil filters should always and ONLY be changed when the oil is changed -- no more often, no less often.
But +1 on the Blackstone Labs analysis to see what works for your specific car under your specific usage.

I have 8175 miles on mine and Blackstone TBN analysis reveals there are still some additives left. They recommended changing due to higher aluminum and lead concentrations and begin to monitor these. I think 10k is easily achievable in the right circumstances.

I think it really depends on how hard you can push the car. I also don't think you can base it on whether you are advanced, instructor or even racer......... I have seen plenty of slow folks with those labels. Now I change the engine oil every track day/weekend in the e46 m3. I have a close track buddy that changes engine oil in an e92 m3 every three days with Blackstone and it looks fine. I would start with every three track days if you can really push the car.

Is anyone here paying for UOAs to see how the oil is holding up? Until you do that, you're just guessing. My UOAs of Edge TWS showed that wear is still low and the oil stays within spec (both viscosity and flashpoint) after track time and autocrossing. The later is of course not hard on oil at all and isn't much different than a few spirited backroads drives or a few consecutive onramp excursions.

Thread hijack: the dealer changed my oil 6.5k miles ago and the car is telling me it's due for an oil change. No track days, and only some spirited driving. Even though I was planning on changing the oil anyways, is that normal? I thought the computer usually runs north of 10k miles before promoting for an oil change?

I change after every 2 track events (4 days) - probably overkill, but gives me some peace of mind. I typically do 8-10 events per year. (FWIW - brake fluid flush every 2 events as well.)

Oil change
Every 3 track days for me and I track once a month. Anymore track days than that then I would have a problem w/ the warden "wife".

Word. Blackstone is so easy to do, I just go ahead and do it. Takes me less time to get the sample packaged and into the mail than it does to dispose of the rest of the used oil from the change.

Depends on number of sessions per track day (not weekend, I do some 1 day weekends as well), I change every 4 track days $120/oil changes x 10 times a year still hell ceaper than a new motor
I want that monster still running hard like some of the well kept E46 that are still going strong today with the F82/80 getting delivered soon. |
