I also try to increase my following distance a bit prior to faster corners because if the car in front of me spins in the turn, I don't want to be in a position where I don't have enough space/grip to adjust accordingly. I had that happen at K1 Speed in go-karts. I was right behind this chick in a turn getting ready to pass on the upcoming straightaway, and she spun on corner exit. I didn't have enough space to brake or go wide and didn't have enough grip to tighten up my line enough, so instead half of my kart literally drove up and over hers. We were both fine, but I kept thinking that I want to make sure that I NEVER leave myself open to that situation on a real track with my car. Typically the car in front of me will let me by in a passing zone even if I've let them pull slightly ahead in the turn right before it.

But if I come into a turn early as the following car and trailing throttle slightly isn't enough to correct, usually I try to straighten up my steering and get a bit of straight-line braking rather than lifting entirely. I might end up going two wheels off, but that's usually preferable to spinning.

i often do this not planned with cars i think should be quicker than me thru the corners, pro3 cars, gt3, gtr, higher hp all wheel guys. when i can make ground against them in the turns I'm fairly happy. happens quite often actually as i lose ground on the straight but then have to reel them in later.

I'd stick to a decently quick ///Miata because it accentuates the effect of the ///Miata being the better handling car as it pulls away in the corners...until that damned hairdresser mobile doesn't and the HPDE trophy is yours for the taking!

I didn't get passed by a single Miata in 2013!

what is a mobile hairdresser? is that how you fit in haircuts is at the track? what about an suv passing you, is that bad. not that its happened or anything.

I've seen Scooter the instructor with TDE go out in the rain at Cresson with Red Group in his Chevy Tahoe and pass people. A different instructor did the same with a Toyota Tundra.

How about this idea, since so many are so eager to flog it from the green flag.

Use warm up laps to focus on a couple things: keep your mind on looking forward for the first couple of laps before giving it the go.

Only time we run yellow laps is the first session of the day. I always take 1 warm up lap even though its often green and allow lots of passes to happen often getting to see spins and off right after it happens on cold tires. For me if I watch the car ahead I often make their errors and don't get past them quickly, if I look thru them and think ahead I get by sooner.

I still do warm up laps at a brisk enough pace just as a mental preprogram sort of thing to focus on certain aspects that i realize i am not doing throughout the day whether it is vision or other techniques or a certain corner etc other than that maybe i should let the engine and tires to get up to temp gradually before hot laps. I see ppl start their car get in line and then hit the nos right away. If i had a dedicated track toy that i can work on whenever it fails prob a diff story but i still need to drive the damn thing home!

None of us wanna break the car. I worked on having faster out laps for a while because it took me so long in a session to get up to speed, now lap 2-3 is full pace if I want and my out lap is 2 seconds off or so. Good to go out with a specific goal and focus every session though like you said.

I do about 1.5-2.5 laps depending on the track or until i say f it too many ppl flying already!

depends a little on how quick the other cars in your session are. out lap could be faster than some others at full tilt.
