You could've left that TWS in for a lot longer (pay for TAN and TBN next time to verify). I'm not a fan of Ceratec, especially in an already excellent oil like PU 5w40; it will certainly work but it's far from optimal, IME.

Damn. That's not good. Try and switch to a thinner oil with shorter drain intervals, and go very easy on the car till the oil warms up. If lead levels go down that's good. If they keep going up then consider doing the rod bearing replacement or get rid of the car. I assume you don't have warranty on it.

I have the certified pre-owned warranty until 5/2014. Would BMW cover a bearing replacement?

I wouldn't worry about anything just yet. Lead was a little high but not outrageous, especially considering you had over 14k miles on the oil.

They would cover your engine if it grenades. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it though.

Shorten the interval, perhaps 8k or 9k next time. I wouldn't lose sleep over the bearing issue -- the number could be elevated merely due to the very long drain interval.

General question for those who have seen high lead: when are you pulling the sample? Midway through the drain or at the beginning? If you get the very first ounce or two that can skew your results.

I know of one car that got very high lead readings, and we definitely pulled in the middle.

With those mods listed in your signature, it would be an ugly battle.

EDIT: Forgot to add, I have 51,xxx miles on the car.

Just got my sample back today. I'm a happy camper

2008 E90, 6MT, AFE Intake, TMS test pipes, Megan rear section.

The car has definitely seen some full throttle. I don't abuse it but I have driven it 'spiritedly'. No track days on this oil.

Car was daily driven in the winter cold on this oil (TWS 10W-60, exactly 5,233).

When I changed it, I put in M1 0W-40 and I plan on doing another sample of that in 5,000 miles.

Mobil1 0W40 oil report, with old 08 style bearings

FYI:
- First 2 oil changes in the report are Liqui Moly 10W60
- The guys at Blackstone are spot on. The car has been run as hard as it's ever been this summer on this oil sample. Probably 6-7 mountain runs, most of them I'm trying to keep up with a 991 C2S in pretty hot weather. Car definitely ran cooler too.

Overall very happy with the results!

Interesting...running Liquid Moly right now and almost convinced to do the 0w-40 jump. Figure I will wait for another 6 months of UOA's to roll in just to make sure. Those results look promising though!

Without TBN or TAN, it's hard to say how much longer you should've left it in for. 4,000 miles is a very short interval. Try 6,000 next time, and maybe 8,000 after that if it comes back good.

Here's my latest oil analysis... Long story short, switching to Mobil 1 0w40 dropped my Lead levels from 5 to 1 and TBN stayed strong at 6.6

Latest date shows Mobil 1 0w40, previous was TWS 10w60, and first was LiquiMoly 10w60

After having a kinda high reading of 28ppm of lead using TWS 10w-60, I switched out to Mobil 1 0w-40. I'm happy to report my number is down SIGNIFICANTLY. I know i'll get some people saying the oil change interval wasn't as long this time around, but I'm fairly certain the shorter interval doesn't have as much to do with the lower number as much as the 0w-40 does....
