Places to Visit in/around Austin Question
Hey Guys,
I'm going to be visiting Austin for an event June 8-11. I was wondering if you folks might be able to recommend some places to eat/hang out. We'll be driving from DFW in the morning of the 8th, so if there are some places to stop along they way we'd appreciate the advice. Cheers! |

Couple of ideas:
a) http://oasis-austin.com/ b) MoPac (1) at West 35th Street, north west to Old Bull Creek Rd, then take Mt. Bonnell Road north west to Capitol of Texas Hwy (360). Also, if you go northwest on Ranch Road 12, from San Marcos, you'll hit a number of great Hill Country roads. If you have the time, you might want to break off of IH-35 and do that for thirty minutes out and thirty minutes back. - V .

Thanks for the recommendations! At least we know we won't be going hungry while in Texas.

Meh...I'm not really all that fond of the cuisine @ the Oasis. There's another restaurant to the right of it, www.soleilaustin.com that has better quality.
If you guys like Thai, you should try http://spinmodernthai.com/ They have very few staples on the menu, with everything else rotating every 2 weeks or so as they try new things. The former head chefs @ Uchi and Uchiko are the culinary chefs there. Downtownish off Lamar, if you're feeling like a little cajun, I'd recommend Shoal Creek saloon, http://www.shoalcreeksaloon.com/. They have an *excellent* chicken fried steak and gumbo. Be forewarned, it is a Saints-themed place. You'll also need to get some bar-b-que while you're here. I'd recommend Franklin's www.franklinbarbecue.com/, but the line is LONG, EVERY DAY *lol*. Everyone seems to enjoy Salt Lick a little south of Austin www.saltlickbb.com, but I prefer Rudy's smoked turkey and cream corn www.rudys.com You can check out the reviews of any of those places online. Have a great stay! Last edited by whats77inaname; 05-28-2013 at 09:37 PM.. |

Yeah, if u like looking out to a dried up lake. I'd personally skip this. Uchi/Uchiko, however, are good choices.

Salt Lick BBQ is a must! Went there in February-- it's out in the sticks but worth the drive; Be sure to bring your own beer or wine. to drink.

I prefer Rudy's BBQ over Salt Lick. I have yet to try Franklins BBQ, but hear it is the best and they will run out of food before noon. For burgers, go to Hop Daddy's. For Thai food, try going to Sway, modern Thai food. And of course for the best chicken wings on the planet, go to Plucker's Wing Factory and get the ranch flavored wings.

I've read that Austinites dine out for more meals per capita than anywhere else in the country, so there really are way too many great places to eat than can realistically be listed here. But to add to what's already been listed, for Tex-Mex, Torchy's Tacos is great for quick and delicious tacos, and although The Oasis has a great view and ok Tex-Mex, I think the food at Hula Hut is a lot better. It's sort of Tex-Mex/Hawaiian fusion and the outdoor area has you right out over the water since it's on a dock. Just don't bother putting your name down to wait for a table since the wait is always absurd, instead walk right out to the outside dock area and to the very back of the covered area, where it's full menu open bar seating, both tables and stools. I go there frequently and have never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table to open up back there, even during busy times, and the reason is because the wait staff doesn't tell you about that area if you ask to put your name down at the front; it's sort of a secret for the locals and regulars. And if you want a great steakhouse that's nearby, check out Austin Land & Cattle. As for drives, this is Hill Country, so there are absolutely endless roads. From 35th & Mt. Bonnell Road, head up Mt. Bonnell to the end, turn left onto 2222, then head down that hill to turn right onto 360 (aka Capital of Texas Hwy), then turn left onto Spicewood Springs and head up that road for a shorter drive. If you have more time to get farther out of town, there's also Anderson Mill & 2769; head down 2769 and turn right onto Lime Creek Rd, which will eventually drop you out back on Anderson Mill almost right back where you started. And in southwest Austin there's Fitzhugh Rd from US-290 all the way to Johnson City if you want to go that far, and from there you can take twisty and almost always empty back roads all the way out to Fredericksburg. I could go on and on depending on how much time you can take driving hill country roads. For hangouts, 6th St from Brazos to Red River is a must. At about 11PM the road gets closed to traffic so it basically becomes a block party. People complain that it can be a college kid hangout, but honestly it depends on what bars you visit -- and considering it's 5 blocks of almost nothing but bars on both sides of the street, there are plenty to choose from, and they offer a huge range of live music to choose from depending on what you want to hear. Best way to do 6th St is start at one end, walk down the street stopping in any bar that appeals to you until you get to the end, then cross the street and walk back on the other side. Just don't show up too early because stuff doesn't really get started until 10-10:30 on weekends, but you can always have dinner and/or drinks at The Driskill if you're there early, which is a very nice historic hotel in Austin and right on one end of the part of 6th St that turns into a block party.

I think Saltlick is overrated. Just because something gets featured on tv doesn't mean it's great (eg: Juan in a Million). Instead, drive out to Lockhart, 30 min south of Austin, and get your bbq fix there. Check out Texas Monthly for their list of best bbq places.

^ LOL. You guys are absolutely awesome! We could start our own Zagat guide with all the reviews here! I love BBQ, so we'll probably visit a few of the places you've recommended.

+1 to The Driskill Hotel. Don't miss it if you are on 6th. Just to see the beautiful lobby, or better yet head up the stairs, sit down on a cushy leather sofa, and order up a Shiner Bock or Fireman's 4 (two of the many local brews to choose from).
Also, the Gingerman pub (Downtown, but not on 6th) has about a bazillion beers on tap. If you head a little north you can find The Pint House where they make awesome pizzas and they brew right on the premises, in addition to having a great draft selection. Edit: that's pint house pizza http://pinthousepizza.com/ and no I dont work there... its just awesome... |

Seriously? If you want something easy to find, easy to get to, and not overly crowded...Rudy's will give you a good taste of TX BBQ...the brisket or the turkey. If you are coming south on I-35, try Schoepf's BBQ in Belton, TX (about 2/3 of the way to Austin from Dallas). Its right off of I-35...but get the chicken. Its fantastic. The ribs are also good. All of those other fancy, crowded, and expensive BBQ places never really do it for me. I've never found them to be much better than Rudy's. But do wash it down with a Shiner Bock or Red Pale Ale! Or if you can find it, a Shiner Cosmos.
