E90 M3 Lightweight to Feature CFRP Bonnet and Seats?
BIMMERPOST NEWS E90 M3 Lightweight to Feature CFRP Bonnet and Seats? Once a year BMW holds a "Technology Day", a showcase of new technology and developments BMW has recently introduced, is about to introduce, or is looking into to make cars better. This year's press release on the matter has quite some interesting bits about BMW's technology, and one of the hottest things they mention is the progress they made in processing CFRP, short for carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The developments made for the BMW i models will be used across the BMW group sooner or later. To demonstrate some possibilites, BMW shows a prototype of an E9x M3 bonnet hood in CFRP. According to BMW, "The lid consists of two carbon layers enclosing either a Nomex plastic or a recycled-paper honeycomb.". It doesn't stop there as a new lightweight seat made from CFRP is shown. It's not mentioned in the press release if there are any intentions to bring these parts into the series production of a car. We're wondering though if this might be related to the just announced Lightweight E90 M3 Concept. We got a first glimpse at the car last Friday at the BMW headquarter in Garching, and BMW promised more news on the car for the M Festival in June. In fact, these spy photos which we just posted shows a lightweight driver's seat, which could very well be the carbon fiber seat referred to here. PRESS RELEASE

Cardboard trunk lid? OK. But something about making a hood out of paper strikes me as being a bad idea.

She must work out...
Edit: That isn't an M3 hood (no power bulge, no vents) and there is no weave pattern on the bonnet. I can't really tell if there is a weave on the seats... |

That hood is just a study sample probably. And you can see the weave pattern on the back of the seat.

Im going to go ahead and just say all of this is just a concept to showcase what BMW can do for the future cars.
Doubt we will see these on the market anytime soon. Theres no airbags in the seats even.
