Don't get peer presured into spending nearly $100k on something you are not even sure you want. There are so many better options out there at that price level.

I park right next to one at my office parking garage every day. It's a beautiful car, but I have zero envy. I'm happy to sit this generation out while I enjoy the E90

this. The F80 looks great, has all the updated electronics and interior, but IMO, is not that significantly performance wise than the E9X M3.

don't let the looks sway you. If I had $80k to blow, I would go with a car that is a much better upgrade, e.g. Z06

But then, that's just one person's opinion. If it has to be your daily driver, then maybe an F8x will do... but as a weekend/enthusiast car, I'll pass. Neither the engine nor the appearance are soul-stirring enough for me.

Rather than "me too" a car purchase in response to your friends, do something exciting and different. There's a world of choices out there!
For $85k ... I'll take a New HAND BUILT 2015 Viper or F-typeR. I don't think the performance of the F80 warrants the price. Is it a better all around car because of interior room, yes. I daily drove Vipers and never really missed it. Note pic of Home Depot run for some "Black Cow" (aka bag of dirty bullshit).

Vipers are a hoot to drive and never really get old. Besides, if 645hp isn't enough a baby stage 1 Twin turbo kit is good for 950-1000rwhp on 93 pump, no motor work needed.

I'd pass on the F8x. Especially since GTRs are going for 88-90k brand new, same interior color options and have stepped up interior quality

For $75k/ $80k I'm picking up a low mileage 2012/2013 Maserati GTS. Ever hear that exhaust note? Near exotic and unique. I turn off the radio anyways, "tech" isn't a decision criteria for me when I'm looking at a performance car.

The problem is the M3 asking price is bumping up to a more exclusive "tier" of cars with the Fx platform but at the same time made the car more mainstream with a non unique M motor. I don't want to be driving the same platform car as my mom (328i) or a beefed up 335i for $80k. I'm driving a 911 / GTS / GTR at that price point all day. Put a unique motor into the M3 / M4 and its a different ball game (to me).

Nice car, but I honestly feel like my E92 is more unique and differentiated than a "standard" 3 series.

They're possibly jealous that you have the better looking and sounding M3...don't fall for it.

I've heard it in person…the car is very nicely modded. However it sounds like a really loud fart especially on the downshifts…

Really tough crowd here. I understand everyone wants to defend their e9x but some of you are extremely narrow minded. And most people aren't paying 85-90k for the M3. With ED you can probably get it for around 60-65, and I can't think of a better car for that price.

Not that it's a huge deal but it is annoying. The GTR for me feels like something I would want to have fun with for a lil while and then move on especially if we're debating high 80k TT 6cyl. Plus I live in stupid Massachusetts so the AWD would be convenient

Maybe not $85-90K, but I just optioned an M4 Coupe with metallic paint, full leather, Executive, Lighting, DCT, 19", EDC, and HK Audio, and it came out to $80K. An equivalent M4 Vert hit $88K, though. Of course you can steer clear of some of those options, but I consider the build I put together pretty typical. Yes that's MSRP, but after sales tax and the various dealer fees, typically your OTD cost is right around MSRP anyway. ED saves you maybe 7%, which puts you a hair under $75K for the Coupe. To get to $60K ED, I had to remove every option, i.e. non-metallic paint, speed cloth, and 6MT (not that I mind 6MT, mind you).

But I think the point being made here is that for not a lot more money than a new M3/4, you can get a car that performs much better and/or is more special in some way. Of course that's nothing new, and those cars often aren't as practical as an M3/4, but as someone else said earlier, the M3/4 has moved higher up the pricing totem pole while simultaneously becoming less special. Yes it's got more techy features and some nice carbon fiber bits like the strut tower brace and driveshaft, and it's more refined (if that's what you want), but it doesn't have a bespoke engine anymore, for example, and I think that's what's causing people not to see as much of a value proposition anymore. Of course even the GT3 doesn't have a bespoke engine anymore, which caused some to cry foul, but when the reviews came out, the engine was heralded as a gem, much like the S65 was, so people stopped really caring. The M3/4's reviews weren't as resoundingly positive this time around, particularly the comments about the engine, which most considered adequate and even deserving of an M badge, but not a particularly special aspect of the car the way the S65 is for the E9x.

Lets just say everytime I pass one I bust out in a laugh, they simply sound sooooo terrible. I mean bad, when you get one at the dealership it has got to come with a complementary bag of rice ha!
I could never own one period, it drives great and looks good from the side. Car just missed the mark, not special sounds horrid not best looks etc.

For that money id find another better sports car with a manual trans, or just get a e92 M3 and supercharge it for half the cost and twice the car/looks.

The car sounds pretty bad from the outside (chainsaw / lawn mower). Inside due to active sound and better insolation, you can't here the unrefined exhaust note. For the average owner the sound "experience" is fine, I bet. At least when I test drove it. It sounded OK inside.

BUT, you could tell active sound is fake sound after all. For the purist, it's unacceptable that an M car cheats in such way. I've seen so many videos of high dollar exhausts for F8X. I have not found a single one that significantly improves the car's exhaust note. It's quite disturbing.

A guy at my gym picked up one of these F-Type R coupes (new) for $98k. Frankly, when you see and hear it in person, it is stunning. Yeah Jaguar, not everyone's cup of tea, but just an example of what ///M BMW's are up against. Yes, this car is $20k more expensive than an M4 when bought with the supercharged V8, so maybe not the best example-- but what I was getting at is that the new F8x ///M cars could be more exciting visually and aurally. I ended up following the F-type for several miles approaching the gym and it is a hoot... looks/sounds exotic.

Problem with the GTR is, people won't be able to tell if it from a ugly POS poser rice rocket.

The Z06 is rare, you can also go with limited anniversary edition or the ZR1. I'm seriously considering one now. Plus I live in California, what is this white stuff you call "not cocaine"?

i did a 15 minute test drive in the F-Type coupe last year. If I owned that car, I would only drive it around in 2nd gear, b/c the car sounds like wetness.

I would wait a few more years for these things to depreciate and maybe scoop one up. The exhaust and is simply intoxicating. The drive is....so so, not as sharp as the M3. This is also the same hour I did a test drive of the 991 Turbo S, so my views on "fast" were distorted that day.

Same boat, and I work at a BMW dealership! One of my buddies that works with me got one, and another is looking to get one. Then they tell me I should hop on the f80 boat, but I love my e90 lol..I just have to stare at f80s all day long

GTRs aren't the prettiest cars by any means but they're ok from certain angles. I don't think anyone would mistake it for anything tho. If you bought a corvette you'd have to grow a mustache and a mullet. You could only wear aviator shades and sleeveless shirts from then on. It's actually quite a commitment especially when the car is only capable of playing "sweet home Alabama" on repeat at full volume

car people who know the GTR, and maybe some random people might view it as a nice car.

but honestly MOST people will think a corvette is a nicer car because the corvette looks nicer, and is a icon.

I remember i was looking into my next car. Showed my sister(21) and mom(50+) the GTR. They were pretty underwhelmed, the corvette got a "wow" reaction.
