1st world problems!

Seriously, though, if someone from outside this board read this and read "The iPhone 5 I plan to get won't work in my BMW", they'd just shake their head.

I think I still prefer the symphony of noises coming from behind the dashboard and from these round tubes somewhere in the back

One of the many reasons I hate apple. All the proprietary crap, especially the I/O interfaces. Why didn't they just make it firewire. Oh right...nm.

Perhaps.... Everyone is allowed to have interest in the things and experiences that make themselves happy.

I do not bother to read sports-forums that spews blah blah blah about NFL replacement referees; or an organic-growing-forum that expounds on the benefits of using horse dung over cow dung for fertilizer; or the aircraft owner's forum about a new DME-based avionics for a four-seater prop.

In an "enthusiast-oriented" website, one will find...uh, enthusiasts.

Anyhow, not knocking your opinion.

I just use an old iPod touch for my music

iPhone 5 will certainly work with Bluetooth for phone calls

I didn't know that was true. I'm switching from my 3gs on ATT to 5 on Verizon. So this means no more looking up addresses while talking on the phone.

Don't do it daily, but when I need it, it's very handy.

Bluetooth audio sounds like crap. Wired connections have a ton more bandwidth and sound quality. Even with the newest Bluetooth streaming standard, the best you are going to get is FM radio quality.

I just preordered mine this morning (64gb black). $500 bucks upgrade on my second line so I don't lose unlimited data on my line. Then again, I can't jailbreak It when it comes in, so I can't tether anyway - talk about a catch 22.

I'll be testing it fully to see what works and what doesn't. I don't see why an extension that plugs into the snap in and converts the 30 pin to the 8pin lightning connector wouldn't work.

If anyone is looking for a factory unlocked Verizon 4S 64gb white, let me know!

Realistically, BMW or Apple should be able to provide some sort of device or software update that will allow compatibility during the product launch regardless. It's unfortunate that your limited IQ inhibits you from being able to realize this.

I don't post here a lot, but this stood out to me so I wanted to share my findings. I'm sure other BMW owners will be surprised when they learn that their brand new shiny iPhone does not work in the same manner as their previous phone.

Superficially, it's hitting all the right marks, but Lightning comes up short in a number of important areas. It is, of course, incompatible with the roughly 350 million billion iPhone and iPod accessories currently on the market -- a problem mostly rectified by a $30 adapter. But, that's not a perfect solution, as even that won't support iPod Out, the specification used in some cars (most notably BMW and Mini) to enable in-dash control of an iPod or iPhone.
Relax man, BMW will come up with a workaround. Apple knows this, they are not stupid.

Well some reasons would be (a) limited space, (b) cannot play ALAC, etc.

I ordered a 5 to upgrade my ooooold 3GS. It will be here friday so I'll see how it works. I was planning to keep the 3GS attached to my M3 permanently for music anyway. Although I should really figure out the HDD...

I am certainly not an Apple fan in general but all in all the iPhone 5 is going to be the shiz.

All the fear, uncertainty, and doubt around here. I've already posted in various other threads about this, but if you buy either of the Lightning adapters, everything will work EXCEPT video playback and iPod Out, aka PlugIn, which is the native iPod video interface that you can put up on iDrive. But both of those features require that you have BMW Apps and the Media cradle. Obviously the 5 won't fit in the 4/4S Media cradle, but people were thinking that if you buy the extension cord-style Lightning adapter, you'd be able to attach the 5 to the dock connector in the Media cradle and get it. Well, you won't. But as others have said, that function is pretty useless anyway. If it's important to you, wait for the 5 Media cradle -- you'll likely be waiting a while given that the 4 cradle took about 7 months to be released (then immediately recalled and not reissued again for 3 more months), and the 5 cradle will likely be more expensive since it will have to include a video DAC because the iPhone 5 only outputs digital video and iDrive only accepts analog.

Everything else, including Bluetooth calls, Bluetooth audio (with Combox), and the regular USB music connectivity will work just FINE, people. Settle down.

And for the micro-USB lovers out there, yes it might be more convenient, but the dock connector was able to support a whole lot more than would have been enabled by micro-USB, including analog video out (composite, S-video, and component), HDMI out, amped analog audio, and line-level analog audio to name a few. I'm sure that tradition will carry on with Lightning as Apple develops future products. Could they have included a microUSB connector as an alternative? Sure, but anyone who knows Apple knows that they don't implement things with functional overlaps. Not saying that that makes micro-USB automatically worse, but it's not as if Apple decided to just reshape a micro-USB port without adding any functions purely to be proprietary.

I don't really bother with the HDD, too limited in terms of navigation. You can only browse by folders, you can't really rearrange files within your folders after the fact, and you can't create playlists or set play scope by searches, e.g. "Play everything from this artist/album/genre".

That will depend on Pandora's compatibility with iOS 6, which I haven't tested. But as far as iDrive is concerned, if you're attached via USB and have BMW Apps, it should continue working fine. If you're USB without BMW Apps, it'll continue working in the relatively limited way it does under that setup. If you're over Bluetooth, it'll be just like normal Bluetooth audio.

The only issue I've heard about is Pandora with BMW Apps not working on the new iDrive system that's in the F10 M5. Evidently that's a Pandora issue and they're already on it.

Bluetooth Audio only works if you have a car produced 9/2010 or later with Navigation, which isn't everyone. And Bluetooth Audio doesn't sound as good as a docked connection. Plus you can't charge your phone that way -- and if you connect your phone to charge it, iDrive disables Bluetooth Audio for that phone. Now, that's all moot because docked audio will work fine anyway, but if it didn't, Bluetooth Audio isn't exactly an equivalent replacement.

It's only this hard precisely BECAUSE Apple held onto the dock connector for so long, giving time for an absolutely enormous ecosystem to develop around it. The dock connector came in 2003 and has been kept across multiple generations of multiple product lines. Say what you will about proprietary connectors, but no other phone connector "standard" has lasted anywhere near that long.

Correct, no simultaneous voice and data on Verizon and Sprint unless you're on Wifi. If you're on AT&T, you only get 3G speeds while you're on the phone even if you're within range of LTE. Lack of simultaneous voice and data on CDMA was the consequence of a design/logistics decision on Apple's part. Great article about it here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6295/w...-svdo-support-

Not as bad as FM (maybe HD Radio), but yes I agree it's not as good as being wired in.
