BMW MPE - anyone painted the cans themselves?

Anyone on here have experience painting the cans on this yourself?

Id like to give it a shot if anyone has a good DIY or good advice for paint and method etc....

Ill be trying this in a couple days from now. If I get good advice and try it I will update this thread with pics.

I used Rust-Oleum high heat BBQ spray. No primer needed, just cleaned the cans real good, taped off the tips and went at it. I've had it on for a couple of years without any issues, it does the trick. Here's a recent pic.

Got any pics of the finish? Maybe some closer pics?

Just get any flat black VHT paint from your local auto parts store, tape off the tips, and have at it! Its very easy and almost impossible to mess up.

I did it this way and mine came out pretty good. I also took the extra step of using a scouring pad followed by solvent and a tack cloth before painting to make sure the paint got good adhesion. Needless to say as with any paint job, prep is the most time consuming part.

I think most of the high temp paint is satin or flat. Honestly, after painting the cans, they're so well hidden I can't tell what kind of finish it has without getting prone with flashlight in hand. Glossy black would be sexy but then you'd have to clean the cans too to keep the gloss popping through. I'm too lazy to go that far, I just wanted them hidden a little.

I would go with a flat black if your goal is to minimize the appearance. Objects are visible because light is bouncing off them and into our eyes. The glossier the surface the more light it reflects, and thus the more visible it is.

Cliff Notes: Go matte/flat black.

Just go with the flat black. As Denk said, when it's all painted, it hides under the car perfectly.

If you have a power washer, give it a nice clean and let it dry. Nice even coats and you are good to go. Really hard to screw it up (unless you paint the tips by accident haha)
