exhaust mod & warranty

I'm planning to do the exhaust mod, swapping the perforated pipes for solid. any thoughts if this could cause a problem with the warranty other then the actual modified part?

They won't know. The welded cut outs will be at the top of the can making it non-visible when your car is on the lift. Either way, dealer won't care. I've had mine for almost 2 years now.

As for your question -- this should only put the exhaust system at stake with regards to maintenance/warranty. I had to pay out of pocket for an issue with my pipes last month, but this is expected is it's not OEM. Oddly, BMW was less expensive repair option.

An aftermarket axle back *shouldn't* affect warranty. Since you are continuing to use the OEM exhaust and the modifications won't be visible while the exhaust is mounted on the car you are further mitigating any potential warranty issues.

With that being said, if you have a catastrophic engine/transmission failure I'd recommend swapping to a stock exhaust before taking to the dealer. BMW will do anything to deny a claim.

People say not to worry and this is somewhat true. As most dealerships won't care for it they will at least know that the exhaust is modified because of the sound that it will produce. So even though the welds are on the top of the axel back they will still know.

I wouldn't worry too much about it but if something with your emissions does become faulty they can use it against you. This of course depends on the dealership.

They may instead be searching for a hole in the muffler and say its broken
