Dinan Underdrive Pulley Kit
I’ve been thinking about purchasing the Dinan Underdrive Pulley Kit for it claims an additional +11 horsepower @ 8400 rpm and +7 lb-ft torque @ 8400 rpm.
For all who have the Dinan Underdrive Pulley Kit how do you like it? For all that are running another brand of Underdrive Pulley kit what are your thoughts on it compared to the Dinan? Do you feel it makes a difference? Thanks in advance,

I have been running the Dinan pulley for the past year. So far I am reasonably happy. I believe the Dinan to be one of the more aggressive pulleys, i.e. It slows down the accessories more. The car seems slightly stronger in the top end. However it does seem to also run a bit hotter at the track.

Hmmm......is the reason for it running hotter due to the accessories being slowed down more?

I got the Dinan pulley installed at the same time as a tune. Hard to comment on just the pulley. I did notice my car running hotter in daily driving. No negative affects, just shows up 5-10 degrees on the temp gauge.

Interesting...... other than running a little hotter how do you like it overall?

I recently installed the pulley on my 08 6MT. Not only was installation very straightforward, I was exceptionally surprised at how the RPM response has improved. Shifting during normal driving is lovely, the RPM fast quickly enough to just make things work. I'm also a huge fan of their machine work. No change in oil temperature that I have noted.

We'd have similar mod's if you do the pulley. I've got a Challenge USA Xpipe and rear exhaust, AFE intake, the pulley, and an ESS tune. Last edited by AW M3; 08-26-2013 at 12:09 AM.. |

Have the Dinan pulley and really like it. As someone said, one of the most aggressive pulleys diameter wise out there, but I only notice maybe 3-5 degrees of oil running hotter in high rpm driving or on the track, if even that. With the pulley, cold starts and starting from 1st gear was smoother for some reason, engine overall seemed smoother at lower end. Power difference is only noticeable at the top end, but it's there (and dyno gains are proven for pulleys). Only downside is that you need special sized belts (that are also difficult to put on for DIYers), but I believe the belts are NAPA, so therefore probably readily available and Dinan also sells them.

Do any of you guys notice any issues with steering or A/C, etc.?
I've also been thinking about a Dinan pulley to go with my Dinan intake, Akra Evo, and BPM Stage II tune. While I'd like to get as close as possible to 400 whp, I don't want to sacrifice too much daily-driver reliability/practicality to do it. As an aside, I've always found it surprising that the Dinan is the most aggressive pulley since they tend to be on the conservative side of things (which I actually appreciate). Wonder what their rationale is with their choice in pulley diameter . . . |

Thanks to all for the input, I will be ordering the pulley along with the two replacement belts today!

I'm assuming it's because you are slowing down the water pump.

I've been running it for about 2 years and there's no negative impact. Even on Hot Houston area track days I don't notice any temp increase. As someone stated, the power will be noticed on the top side....above 4k. And the smoothness in which it's delivered is worth the price of the pulley kit..............Phil

It’s $399 on Dinan's website, however even if rounded up to $500 that's still a great deal for a proven additional +11 horsepower @ 8400 rpm and +7 lb-ft torque @ 8400 rpm. There's no other mod for $500 bucks that will get you those hp & torque numbers all without interfering with your warranty!

I shot Gilbert over at McKenna Performance a PM hoping he can get me a better price on it, waiting for him to get back to me. Sometimes McKenna Performance will have discounts on Dinan products.

Me too, please!
Regarding the water pump, I wonder if a tune could slightly increase the speed of the water pump to the point where, with a pulley, you'd basically be breaking even or maybe slightly less than the water pump on a stock car. In that way, you'd be focusing the under-driving on all the truly non-essential accessors (A/C, steering, etc.). So, basically, just a slightly tweaked tune file for those with pulleys. |
