FAIL Driving in NYC

Few nights ago I decided to take the M for a ride around LES after a night at BNE. Heading home towards Williamsburg I decided to take Christie St., traffic is minimal aside from the crazy NY taxi drivers. I was in the outer Left lane heading towards Delancy when a taxi driver cut me off, seconds later I heard a nasty scraping sound. For a minute I thought the guy hit me, but looking at my rear view realize I just ran into a mound of asphalt FML. Seriously? a F'ing mound of ASPHALT! Finally got home went to inspect the damages, a bunch of deep scrapes on the underside of the front bumper. Dilemma, should I get it touched up or am I better of getting a front lip? Cost is about the same, few shops told me they have to respray. Not really keen on the idea of spending $500 to $800 on touching up the scrapes.

I drive in city several times a week. Car is dropped on 20's with a front lip. You just have to be cautious. It's not impossible to drive in city without any damage, it's just a bit unnerving. Enjoyable in the summer with the top down though.

My car is lowered on Dinan's stage II suspension system, and I had the underside of my front bumper nicked in a few places while parking. I just had a professional touch it up, then apply a thick 3M clear adhesive on the entire underside. That way the 3M film gets scratched and saves my bumper.

The 3M film is similar to a clear-bra, but it is thicker. Not sure what my installer used, but if you want I can ask. So far so good though, no issues.

mdyaman, how much did the touch up cost you? I started looking at similar solution a thicker clear bra type, but I'm also leaning towards getting a used front lip.

I hardly see any M3's in NY that are lowered, like some I decided not to drop the car and buy expensive rims. If you guys know of someone that are selling VRS Aero type lip used let me know.

Lesson learned, definitely will be cautious next time. Just didn't dawned upon me how low the M3's are. I got used to driving my IS350 in the city and not have to worry about scraping the front bumper.

What are LES and BNE? Where is Williamsburg? Only one I know of is in Virginia. Where is Christie St? Where is Delancy?

OP....this is a national and international forum. You are talking as if we are all just kids from the neighborhood. I notice a lot of Socal people do this too.

If I lived in NYC, I would drive an Urban Assault Vehicle....a big SUV with meaty tires and big-ass metal grill guards front and rear.

well, because I've been a repeat customer of his and referred a lot of business to him, he practically did it for free for me, as a favor. I paid $50 which was for the touch up and application of the thicker 3M film.

+1

I reached the point where I would not take my 335i with sport package into New York or Boston because I was constantly bubbling tires (RFT and non-RFT) and bending rims. i don't take the M into the city very often because I have other cars that are more pleasant to drive in that environment but the M is much better at dealing with potholes, recessed manhole covers, etc. than the 335 was with its RFTs and overly harsh suspension.

Ahhh my apologies, totally forgot this is an international forum. LES = Lower East Side part of Manhattan, BNE = Beauty and Essex "Swanky Bar Lounge in LES", Christy St. is one of the street in Lower East Side and Williamsburg = A Bridge that connects Manhattan to Brooklyn.

I have to check my RFT for bubbles this weekend...

if it's a mound of asphalt and it's the reminents of city works or private construction projects, you should file a compliant and ask for them to pay for the damages.

What a great idea, why didn't I think of that. I'll check in with the city and my insurance see if they can fork out the cost. Thanks...

Your car looks familiar, do you go to the Martino's car show in Glencove?
