Exhaust slut is back. MXP exhaust thoughts

After 5 months driving the 997.2 C2S PDK that I bought, I decided that it wasn't the car for me. If I was going to spend over $70k on a car, I had to love it, not just like and, and I didn't love it. It was lots of little things, the outdated navi, the less crisp response of PDK at low rpm, the backwards shifting from the shift lever, the quirkiness of the, the lack of back seat room (my 1.5 year old little boy's feet were pretty cramped back there) and I decided that it was time to move on.

I did a lot of test driving and thought that I'd get something else, a C63 coupe, a CTS-V, an F30 335i, an e60 M5, a Golf R, an STI, an Evo MR, a 911 turbo, etc. Went around and around and nothing has the balance of an M3. Great motor, not too obnoxious or ticket attracting, decent handling, decent room and comfort, etc. I finally decided that I'd get another M3. I've owned a number of M3's before, a 97 E36/4 w/Dinan supercharger, an 05 E46 M3, a 2011 E90 M3, a 2011.75 E93 M3, etc. Since I'd had an E90 and an E93, I decided to get an E92, but this time I wanted a manual. M-DCT is great, and I've had it in my last two cars, but I figured that if I was going to ride this pony again, it was going to be a 3 pedal car. The last few cars I've owned, (E60 M5, E90, E93 M3, 911) have all been flappy paddle automatics, yes, they've all had clutch or clutches, but none have been controlled by the driver.

It was time I get back to my car guy roots and exercise my right to shift by myself. No more of this sissy computer shifting crap, no launch control taking of precious tenths or hundreds of seconds in my launches, no sir. This time, it was all going to be me, 1 friction disk, 1 pressure plate, 1 flywheel and 3 pedals, to rule the world.

Took delivery of a jet black E92 M3 6sp in January. It has premium, ZCP, heated seats and BMW apps. A pretty loaded car in any other measure, but for an m3, actually pretty light on options. Paid $1000 over with the $1000 incentive... on the last day of the incentive. Probably could have done better if I'd grinded a bit but decided not to, and was in and out in less than 1.5 hours.

How does it feel? Pretty much the same as my other cars. Not too exciting. I like the ZCP suspension, I definitely feel like it makes a difference in the handling of the car. It just feels more stable, with crisper turn-in and more aggressive shock damping, compared to my 2011 E90 without ZCP. It's good enough to where I will probably leave the suspension alone, at least for now.

Ok, enough about the car, you guys already know all this. You probably came here for a review of the MXP exhaust.

This is what I've owned so far:
2011 E90 M3:
Magnaflow
Corsa
Riss Racing
Autobahn Exotics
Vanguard
Vanguard + Fabspeed X pipe (stock primary cats)
Akrapovic slip on + Fabspeed X pipe
Akrapovic slip on
Akrapovic Evolution
Challenge Sport X pipe + Akrapovic Slip on
Challenge Sport X pipe + Arqray titanium
Turner Test pipes + stock
Stock X pipe + BMW Performance exhaust
Turner Test pipes + BMW Performance Exhaust
Turner Test pipes + Arqray
Turner Test pipes + Innotech rear section

On my 2011 E93 M3:
Innotech rear section (doesn't fit with the E93's brace)
Akrapovic Slip on
Eisenmann Sport

Back to the MXP: First off, it's a fantastically built piece of kit. There is only one flaw, but it will cause some consternation... the hangers are just too frigging thick! they are an absolute BEAR to get onto the unyielding stock urethane and metal mounts. I ended up buying a set of Kartboy exhaust hangers, turns out the 12.5mm holes 1.4" apart are just about a perfect fit for our exhaust hangers. Much easier to get on and off too. With that problem solved, the exhaust fits perfectly. No adjustments needed, except to stagger the tips properly. They are large and beautiful single walled tips, with burnt ends that look pretty nice. The cans tuck under and hide pretty well, too.

When I took it out of the box, I looked at it and thought, "Holy crap, this is going to be loud. No resonators, just 4 small straight through mufflers." Beautiful construction, I like the cast pieces that form the Y joints and the smooth and even welds, even though they lack the character of hand done welds. I could have sworn I took some pictures during the install but I can't find them now... oh well.

On first start, the bassy roar of an uncorked S65 filled my senses and rattled my brains. These cars are not joking around, I felt like my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head from the resonance. It'd been too long since I'd heard the sweet song, (instead, having to listen to the blatty flatulence of Porsche's direct injection 9A1 motor, through a Tubi exhaust). The cold start cycle was over quickly and the bellow settles into a mild hum, reminding you that the car is not stock.

As the exhaust gets some warmth into it, it mellows out, as if it wasn't very happy at being woken up from a cold slumber. With the windows up, it's pretty bassy under 2000 rpm, but switches to a much more melodious tenor voice, above 3000 rpm. Once warmed, at wide open throttle, it sings loudly with the induction noise, to produce a very unique symphony in this price range. Sounds very Maserati in the upper rpms, with a fluid melody of various resonances and tones. Much more complex than the stock sound, clean and bright with no rasp or tinny sounds.

It's definitely not subtle, but at cruise quiets to just above a whisper, easy to talk over, but still there, reminding your and urging you on.

I like. Although... it's going up for sale, as my Corsa just got here. Ugly cans, thick ropy hand done welds and all, I just painted it black and will install this weekend.

Used to, but settled down and am happily married now. I landed a good one, so I play with cars instead.

Hey Kit, pretty much dead on with the PCar. I had a 997.1S and although you had a .2 car it pretty much mirrored my experience. However, I do have my eyes on a 991 maybe later on down the road. The Flat 6 motors sound better with high flow cats, my 997S with AWE cats and Borla cans sounded pretty righteous, although still not as good as my 2011 E92 M3 with TTPs and my lowly Megan exhaust.

What do you like better about the Corsa vs. the MXR? BTW man glad to have you back.

Dave

hahaha... I'm hoping to say the same one day. Btw, what were your thoughts on the AKRA? I have it paired with the Dinan X pipe currently. But you seemed to have gone through quite a few, so I'm curious.

p.s. I can't stand Porsches.. I find them fugly.

I have a weird relationship with the Akrapovic. I like the way they sound outside the car, and I love the way they look and the quality. I don't like the tinny resonance I could never get rid of with the Evo (at around 3500rpm, right where you get the intake resonance). I think it sounds little boring inside the car too, and that is where I spend the most time.

Welcome back! I've driven a good portion of the cars you mention and I concur...obviously I guess.

Great review as always! Your comments seem spot on based on the video.

The Corsa sounds great in the videos I've heard; only issue is looks - but you are addressing. Have fun!

I'd imagine.. he has a bit too much to care. Or perhaps he puts personal satisfaction above penny pinching. Props to him either way. I know its hard for me to lose money on anything.

I don't know why this thread has to become a thread on how much money he spent on exhausts. Its his money and I know he sells the exhausts he buys and gets back probably 80% of the money. However, its no ones business on how and where he spends his money. We should all just be grateful that the "exhaust slut" is back..

My issue with the MXP is I was never into black or dark tips..to old school I guess, got to be polished.

hehe, I do fine. I buy a lot of my stuff used or at discount, etc. My total out lay after selling all my E90 stuff was tiny.

Dave, the MXP has polished burnt tips. They are dirty in my video. It'd be easy to polish them to a shiny finish! (I did it with my Arqray)

Yeah I do feel the ZCP difference, it's subtle but there. When I said, "not too exciting," I meant that you've heard the reviews of the car already.
