How long did it take to get first information on your order?

I placed an order for my M3 on March 10th and don't have a production number or any other information yet. Is that typical?

Depends on when your dealer puts your order in. Once the order is put in they should have a production number for you so you can track it on BMWUSA.com. For example, I got my production number on the same day my order was put in. This was back in last November.

Why would they delay putting an order in? Doesn't make sense. At least I know the problem is with the dealer.

Every dealer is given a certain allocation of production slots based on size of the dealer and historical sales. Smaller dealers get fewer production slots. You may place an order but if your dealer doesn't have an available production slot the order will not be given a production number until a slot is available.

I got mine while I waited because my dealer had a 335 slot that they were able to change to my M3. Some folks take a bit longer...

Having said that, some dealers are just not as friendly or customer oriented so the information flow is more difficult...
