Mosport Big Track report
Mosport GP report
So I finally got out to the Mosport big circuit with the M for a full day.I was instructing at a school where I had to lead & follow a student in a Camaro 3rd gen race car that had no passenger seat,so of course I volunteered as I on track for both his advanced & my instructor sessions.I ended up logging about 300 kms(185 miles) and 2 tanks of fuel.We ran quite a bit and through the help that I gave him with lines he was lapping about 3 seconds quicker than his best previous times.I find it quite amusing when we were lapping that I had to short shift @ 6500 in order not to run away from him up the 3/4 mile uphill back straight We were both extremely happy how well the school part of the day worked out. The instructor lapping sessions were quite interesting as there were a few cars out that the M has been compared to quite a bit. There was a well setup RS4 on Michelin Sport Cups that I followed to the back straight and got a good launch out of the 2nd gear hairpin and was able to pass him and pull him by about 5 lengths unaided by slipstream. It sure sounded great as it had some sort of exhaust on it.There was also some new style STi's there that had been breathed on and again once I was in 4th it was no problem to pass. The most interesting playmate for myself was a C6 Vette with the LS2 that was being well driven by a friends son that could only pull up on me in the slipstream but not go by me once he pulled out and the rolls were reversed when he was in front of me. The car itself worked very well and I have to say that the S65 is an awesome big track engine.I was getting 138 mph at the end of the straight in 5 th gear according the GPS tracker which is about the same as my 01 C5 Z06 went and the tallish 3rd gear is quite useful on this track.I found the car to quite neutral with oversteer as the limiting factor under power which really makes me wonder if a square setup would be too loose for myself.I was able to get a lot of oversteer in the 3rd gear corners if I was aggressive but my rears might be heat cycled out of grip after 3 days of use and only about 2/32 left.I find that there are no issues with front end grip with 255's up front and the only issue is that it does need more camber more for tire wear than handling at least at this point. The oil stayed 110c all day and no issues with power steering venting and no diff noises even after 1/2 hour sessions but I did have some brake vibration when they were hot,but went away when cooled off and on the street there was zero pulsation. Overall I continue to be very impressed with how well this car works on track for being a wonderful everyday street car.Yes I know it can be improved for the track but I will get a real track car before I go down that road. |

All stability settings off, full hard on both steering & shocks and the medium setting on the throttle.I tried the MDM on for a lap just to see what it would do and is terriable as it kept intervening when you needed the power to drive out of the corner.I now understand why people are having as many on track brake issues caused by the MDM intervention.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that my dash display was displaying 248kph vs the actual of 222 kph(138mph) from the GPS tracker.

I first went to Mosport in 63 with my dad & sisterShit I am old!I still prefer Calabogie & Tremblant as they are both much more technical than Mosport but it is still a very challenging place to go quick at.

The M3 is a good match for the C6 LS2 indeed. Don't get your hopes up on not using MDM solving potential brake overheating problems! The brake problems I ran into at the Glen were all with everyhing off. A really fast track tests these brakes IMO.

The brakes are OK if you make a point to manage their use to keep the temps in check. The reality is that this is a 3700 lb car with a fair bit of power that goes fairly quick that is a wonderful street car that is not focused for hardcore track use.If I was going to get serious about a lot of track work there would be a BBK in the future. There is just not enough pad area in these calipers & the cooling also needs to be addressed. But that being said I can live with the stock brakes for the amount of lapping that I am actually doing and I do not think that I will not really enjoy any day that I do with the stock setup.

I guess Mosport is harder on brakes than I thought. This is of a C5 Z06 that set a new lap record on Sunday.

SubwOOer was saying that he was getting 2-3 days out of NAPA rotors and 4-5 days out of OEM rotors on this C5 Z06.

Great Mosport Report
Gearhead,
I am going to Calabogie on the 17th with my E90 M3 for the first time. I have lots of experience previously at other tracks in E36s M3s and an E46 running R-compounds. With all the weight of the E90 I am seriously concerned about killing my 5 month old PS2s and want to run Rs, but I dont know what set up to go with. I dont want to break the bank, as I will only be doing about 4 to 6 days a year. I have seen a few posts about staggered vs square setup and although I would prefer to go square (for cost and swapping purposes) I too have been bit hard previously and dont to crash my daily driver. What are you running and if you were to change, what would be your recommendations? Thanks Vico |

What are you doing for brakes as Calabogie will be fairly demanding on them? |
