The M3 EV Identity Crisis: A Data-Driven Look at How Enthusiasts Really Drive
Summary
The BMW M3 EV concept has sparked plenty of debate. It’s too heavy. It has no manual. It’s not a “real” M3. It’s an EV. It lacks the sound, the soul, the heritage. Rather than argue opinions, I decided to ask two simple questions:
The results were interesting. It turns out many of us have track-car opinions, but daily-driver use cases. The data suggests the debate may be less about horsepower, lap times, weight, or charging—and more about what we believe an M3 should represent. A quick disclaimer: this is not a scientific study. It’s simply a snapshot of the community based on those who chose to participate. Like any poll, the results are only as good as the sample size and response rate. Everyone had the same opportunity to vote, so the results reflect the voices that showed up. Shout out to those who participated—thank you! With that out of the way, here’s what the numbers say. Results M3 EV Sentiment
The largest single response was:“Even if it becomes the best-performing M3 ever, I’d still choose an ICE M3.” (24 votes) Yet only 22% of respondents identify as track-day drivers. That suggests the debate is less about measurable performance and more about:

If raw speed was the only metric, EVs would be flying off the lots. Enthusiasts want an experience, in the case of M, and experience based on heritage. One that excites all the senses. They want to drive the car, not be driven by computers. They want a raw experience, not a clinical one. Up to this point, the consensus is that EVs are quiet, smooth, computerized, bland and frankly boring outside of straight line acceleration.
It’s BMW’s responsibility to transition the purists to EV. It’s not enough to make an electric M3 and say “see, it says M3 on the trunk lid.” Admittedly they have an uphill battle. |

![]() I feel like most on this forum "get it". I also believe that the average EV buyer is really more into technology, environmental narratives and has a use case that fits an EV perfectly. That is all fine and dandy but many enthusiasts dont roll like that. ![]() Quote:

"In other words, the resistance appears to be primarily emotional and philosophical, not technical. The poll indicates BMW’s biggest challenge with the M3 EV isn’t proving it can be fast—it’s convincing enthusiasts that an electric M3 can still feel like an M3."
This is an obvious point and has been repeated ad nasueaum.

Again, who needs 1,000hp as a daily driver. Utterly pointless. They only way to judge what the market truly wants is to make the EV and real M3 like for like when it comes to power. If not its not a true comparison and the ICE is subsidizing the EV. Its funny how this point gets “lost” by some.

Barking up the wrong damn tree. You'll never give an EV a soul. That comes from the engine. It doesn't have one.
Correction, you could LS swap the EV.
