Increased emissions code keeps haunting me

Any insight would be appreciated.

Car is ‘12 dct catless alpine tune. Tune and exhaust on about 2-3 years.

In 2023 a single code popped up P2297, increased emissions. I swapped the front 02 sensors and the code jumped to the other bank. Easy, replaced 02 and I was good.

Last week, I got the same code again on the newer sensor. I swapped the sensors, and the code jumped again. Is something fouling Bank 1 sensor? I’ve looked via ista and cleared sensor adaptations. I’ve only ever had that single P2297 (2728) code.

Anything have thoughts?

Most likely due to the fact that your car is "catless" therefore the "increased emissions" message is triggered occasionally. The frequency of message is also linked to the location of the pre-cat and post-cat O2 sensors proximity to each other. There are quite a lot of threads out there if you use the forums advanced search feature to find them. Your tuner may be able to help and/or a different X-Pipe.

austin2334 in addition to DrFerry comments - -encourage you to consider findings and expensive lessons directly related to described 'symptoms'.

There can be multiple 'causes' for emissions issues. Sounds like you have ISTA, if so go with native BMW codes for best diagnosis as opposed to generic PXXXX codes. Clearing adaptations for emissions alone, not the answer as there's several other useful DME and system measures reset/lost.

One telling measure is idle trim. Observe readings 'live', particularly behavior during cold start idle then idle trim transition to normal op temps. Typically provides an indicator if idling, running lean [posts on this topic as well].

I’ve got the same tune from Alpine. The stage 2 is putting more fuel through the engine, and possibly fouling the O2 sensors. Alex’s software allows you to pull the codes as well, and I’ve found there is more detail with his software. Worst case scenario, I would reach out to him directly, but don’t expect an immediate response.

It went how I expected. It’s my car, nothing with the tune. But he did respond in about 5 min!

I bought a smoke machine to test for exhaust and vacuum leaks. If I find nothing, I’m thinking it may be the secondary air valve. Is there a way to test the valves with ista?

Smoke tested breather lines and exhaust and found nothing. I do have a slight bouncing idle on warm up that is probably the idle control valve since the fuel breather valve has been replaced. Anyone know if a bad idle value can give you a rich trim while coasting or possible 2728?
