different 'sport' drive modes?

I have a 2022 530i Xdrive. I have the 'sport' drive mode set to 'standard'.

It appears that the car drives little differently if I enter 'sport' via the button on the console; vs sliding the shifter handle to the left into the 'sport' gate. The 'differences' seem to be in shifting rpms; upshifting and downshifting.

Am I imagining things? Or, are the 'modes' different?

Of course they are. This is why they are engaged differently. Simply put, the button is for throttle, the shifter handle is for the gearbox. You know there's an engine and a gearbox in the car, don't you? There's also a suspension (depending on your car's factory set up). They do behave slightly differently. The Sport button mainly changes throttle, steering transmission logic based on your Sport configuration, while moving the shifter into the sport gate forces a more aggressive transmission program with higher shift points and quicker downshifts. BMW treats them as related but not identical inputs.

Thanks. That's exactly how the two differed in 'feeling'.

Because both were called 'sport', and virtually everything is computer controlled, I expected them to simply be different ways to access the same programming.
