E90 M3 Shut Off While Revving

Hey everyone,

I was running my E90 M3 earlier today, letting it idle, once warmed up, I was lightly revving it a few times while parked. After a few of revs, the engine suddenly shut off. There was a warning light with an exclamation mark and a message saying “Ignition switched on.”

The car started right back up without hesitation, no check engine light or rough behavior afterwards. Everything seemed normal again, but it caught me off guard.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas what might cause it?

Don't see an immediate issue.

I would look into the basics first.
Spark plugs, what's the gap?
Air filter, is it clean?
IAC valve, is it dirty? Maybe it's slugish..
Have you changed your fuel breather yet?

You could also try to reset all your DME adaptions.

Car runs and drives great, definitely agree it’s not an immediate issue.

I actually did a major service a couple of months ago; new spark plugs (properly gapped), new air filter, and replaced the fuel breather valve. Haven’t touched the IAC valve though, so I’ll definitely look into cleaning or inspecting that next.

Also curious about resetting DME adaptations, do you think that could help in a case like this? How do I go about this?

Okay, so all that info is good to know!

The easiest thing to do next would be to reset the DME adaptions. For this I personally use INPA as it's the quickest non-BS way to get to what want. But you can also use ISTA for this as well.

Those are the two methods I would try next.

Have the recalls been done on this car?

I had my local BMW dealer perform all open recalls last year.

• B611119 Recall: Repaired positive battery cable (#19V-472)
• B640717 Recall: Repaired blower motor wiring (#17V-676)

As far as I know, there haven’t been any new recalls since then.

Battery cable loose or something to disrupt voltage.

Oh! Right! Gotcha...makes sense.

Perhaps a loose ground wire somewhere. The engine shifts slightly when you rev it. Especially if your mounts are worn.
