Oil sensor issue
Ongoing issue with oil sensor ;reading jumping from high to low and most of the time staying below minimum (with dreaded low level message on idrive ).
I already changed oil sensor (but bought aftermarket eBay one ) on my last oil change ,but issue still there. Does new oil sensor needed any calibration with some software when installed(I didn’t perform any)? What are my options here before I buy OEM sensor (£190) and do full oil change again ? Anyone had similar issue or knows the answer to my troubles? Thanks |

Requires no calibration but it may take up to a week of driving to make stable and consistent readings. I have no experience or confidence in aftermarket sensors. But if they perform anything like eBay aftermarket coils on this car I would stick to BMW or maybe Vemo. Been burned too many times with counterfeit/sub-standard sensors off eBay to trust that shit.

Plays with my mind as this below minimum level warning is quite often there . I was also told by some guys and BMW techs that when it comes to electronics BMW doesn’t really like aftermarket stuff…. Only concern is that my original OEM sensor was behaving similar (not so erratic ) ,so that’s the reason I changed it(should have gone for OEM ). So I’m asking this community to see if there is another underlying issue I may have with my car /electronics etc .. |

Yup, no calibration needed. The sensor and car do it automatically. As mentioned above you need to stick with BMW factory sensor. I too asked around and my trusted mechanic and another BMW master tech said you need to use the factory sensor. Any other sensor will not yield consistent readings or results.
A few years ago the original sensor on my 2010 started acting up. It would take a long, long time to provide a reading and acted odd once in a while. I replaced it with a Vemo sensor thinking it was just like the factory part. It gave me odd readings from day one. Sometimes registering high, then okay, then high again. 3 months ago I changed oil and installed a new BMW factory sensor and oil level is working perfectly fine. No more strange odd readings. Registers oil consistently and fairly quickly too. |

Any idea why Timec engraved on the casing of the sensor ? I found a seller on eBay who sells original sensor ,he sent me pic (really confused how to attach on here) .Seller also thought it was produced by Hella ,but when opened package the writing on it states Timec and also has BMW logo. If I remember from memory my old OEM sensor also had Timec on it Last edited by zedtom3; 09-26-2023 at 11:54 PM.. |

Unfortunately I don't have good news. Did not find Hella oil levelling sensor for M3. And this: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1343867 also says that OEM is not available. In such case I would use the expensive original one. |
