Starting July 19th, 2021… California smog stations started using equipment that scans your ECU to check for a tune… and fails tuned cars.

Wondering if anyone with an Alpine or BPM tune failed/passed after this date?

Here is the article:

In Sacramento I passed with Alpine tune last year. I don't have my exact date in front of me but I remember worrying about it so I think it was after July 21st. My only mods are Alpine tune and 2-pipe Exhaust Mod.

As long as it doesn't delete your cats it will.

Dinan is smog legal, alpine stage 1 should pass.

Yes, you can pass with tune, as long you have all cats.

They will do a visual inspection.

If you need a guy I know someone in the bay!

Right, I have a Dinan smog now… and passed before this law passed.

But, I'm wondering if anyone here has passed smog with an Alpine or BPM tune after July 19, 2021, which is when this new law was implemented

(the smog station now scans then OBD to check for non-stock tune, and automatically fails cars with a tune)

That's how it has traditionally been, but did you read the article?

Smog station OBD scanners in CA now scan the ECU for tunes; and automatically fail cars with tunes.

Some cars pass, others don't. I'm guessing they are only flagging specific variants right now but still have the data that you have a "tune".

Only CARB legal tune is Dinan's

I still don't know anyone that's failed for a tune that doesn't delete O2 monitors, personally.

But the moral of the story is clear: F CA and it's nanny state BS

I'm not sure how their computers compare stock code to aftermarket code, but they claim then can tell.
Lets just hope they can't really read it, though it's not terrible to tube back to stock.

Not if the the tune is CARB legal like Dinan.

I have ESS and just reverted to stock last year in like July or August. Flashed back to ESS after.

It is called CAL ID and with calculated CVN. The DMV should have a list of authorized pairs from the manufacturers.

That said, it's possible for a tuner to do the math and make it match, like a checksum.

https://www.bar.ca.gov/arsc/newslett...-modifications

I've been aware the data have been collected by smog station machines for awhile but DMV did not act on the data. It's only last year they mentioned they will start enforcing but I have yet to see tunes fail. Only ones I've seen automatically fail are 996 turbos with cat delete tunes.

I was never able to get O2 readiness monitors set with Alpine 1 tune. Flashed back to stock and quick drive up and down the fwy and O2 monitors set. Passed smog the next day. IMO need stock tune to pass smog.

I've had Dinan tune for a while now, and have always passed smog with it.

I have… They don't know for sure, especially given that this is a fairly new law, and only in California (hence why this thread is in the Cali section).

Does their site state for off-road use only when trying to purchase?

If you're just doing a regular smog, and you're in SF… Just go to Clean Air Smog on 10th St… It's $35 + $15 certificate, so $50 out the door, but it's a straight edge legit smog place, no funny business, although best price in town for sure.

Same with me. Failed with Alpine Stg 1 as monitors are not set. Removed tune and passed.
