How to stop GoPro from overheating?

Stupid Gopro keeps shutting down&not record laps on hot laps due to heat. Any ideas other than cutting a hole through my window?

Which GoPro is it? The 9 gets hot but didn't shut off on me in 100F temperatures and clear, sunny skies while mounted to the inside of the windshield. Also using the factory GoPro branded batteries. Keep it out of the sun or better yet, cool it somehow, when not in use so it doesn't start already being too hot.

Are your windows down while on track?

My 8 overheats and dies all the time at autocross. I usually mount it on the rear quarter glass and in a plastic waterproof case. The trick I have learned is to keep spare batteries and swap them in when it is overheating. That of course doesn't work when you are on-track in the middle of a session but swapping batteries between sessions should help. Depending on where you mount the camera you can also get the side door with a hole in it to plug in a charger and then connect the camera to continuously charge on an external battery pack which also can help.

Make sure you are turning off the display. That will increase battery draw dramatically, and in turn gets the camera hotter. Which case are you using, if any?

I have never had either of my GoPros (3+ Silver and Black 8) go into thermal protection. They're mounted on the harness bar and sit right next to my helmet.

Are you leaving it to bake in the car window most of the day - or installing it just before use?

The only method I've found that works almost every time is to remove the battery and have the gopro connected to the car via a usb cable.
It messes up your file names but it makes it capable of functioning.

I have the GP5, 7, 8 and 9. They are all pieces of shit. Almost every time i use them I think of getting a large rock and smashing them to bits.
They may be the best piece of shit available, but still a POS

Also, it depends on what you're recording settings are. I use 4k60fps because I'm in 2021, not 2001, and I'd like to properly see my vids

Like SYT mentioned above, running it off USB will help with thermal management. 4K/5K setting will melt the camera if your running it on a hot day, setting it to 1080p or 2.7K will help. Lastly, basic stabilization over hyper-boost or whatever its called will help. In other words, the less that tiny CPU has to work inside the camera, the cooler it will run. I ran my H8 and H7 for 3 hours in Texas heat with no issues.
