Rod Bearing surprise

My car is currently up at McGinity Motorworks in Carmel Indiana getting my rod bearings replaced. It's a 2008 E90 M3 with 64k miles. I bought it October 2019 with 58k miles. Nothing was wrong, just installing them preventatively as I have no plans on ever getting rid of it. He sent me these pictures yesterday.

This pic is of the oil pan. First pic is the first clue. Silicone where there should be none.

When he removed the pan, he found the oil pickup was clogged with silicone. Who knew the engine was cracked open before with only 58k mi one it.

Bearings don't look like the original 2008 set, don't look bad though. Don't mind the glare on them. Car is buttoned up, ready for alignment.

I see some copper. That doesn't seem abnormal. Also it doesn't seem likely the bearings were changed.

Was the car in any accidents? Perhaps the pan was replaced and someone got over zealous with gasket maker.

Incredible they used silicone... tells you how much they know of the S65...

Wow...I assume the shop pulled out the pickup tube, cleaned it properly and used a new o ring for the reinstall.

Upper 2, lower 6 and 7 don’t look good to me.

I "should" be picking the car up today. I'll give the old bearings a closer look then.

Yes, they have done dozens of S65/S85 bearings and they made sure EVERYTHING is in order. I think you are seeing the glare off the oil. If there was something concerning when they R&R them they would have certainly informed me. They are likely the best experts in the state regarding these engines.

Looks like the original lead/copper bearings pre 5/2010 build.

Yeah, all healthy now. I am SOOOOOO happy I got this done now. They got it all cleaned up and working 100%. Scary stuff.

Replaced with BE/ARP. They looked pretty typical for 60k miles. Nothing alarming but certainly getting worn.

You did the right thing and replaced them with the right bearings as well, congrats

Did they do motor mounts?
What oil did they recommend to fill?
Did you check out Reggie's or Euro Motorwerks for quotes also?

I supplied the BE bearings (I had ordered them in July and got them a couple of weeks ago) and bought a set of Revshift green motor mounts. It was a couple of grand for the labor, alignment, and parts (oil, gaskets, etc)

Yes, no extra charge of course for the install. I knew they would likely need changed. He showed me mine, they were toast at 64k miles. The Revshift green are much more solid, a bit noisier, but I shift the gears easier and I swear I feel a difference in the clutch (maybe just in my head)

They use Liqui Moly 10w60

I had a friend come here for his E92 and E46 M3's and was impressed. Then knowing that they've done lots of S65 and S85 RB's made me comfortable enough to him without price shopping. I rather pay a bit more (not sure if they would be cheaper) but use someone who is VERY familiar with this issue and will install them correctly. He loves these cars as much as I do. They were replacing a failed crank hub bearing on a F80 when I was picking mine up. They were not sure what kind of damage they were going to find. That makes me very comfortable giving them mine. I typically work on my own car so it's hard for me to give my car to just anyone.
