After reading all the rave reviews and hearing the difference, I decided to pull the plug and modify mine.

Used a regular cordless grinder with 4.5" diameter and .040" thick cutoff wheel to open up the upper section. Was a little awkward with the sawzall to cut the interior sections of perforated pipe, but it worked fine.

I ended up buying a 120v welder and doing it myself to justify a new tool purchase. Took about an hour to get the exhaust out, 4 hours to modify and another hour to get back in. I had a local shop cut some 2.5" pipe and flare one end to slide over the existing sections in the muffler. Each piece of pipe ended up being about 5.5" long.

Unfortunately the car is on a lift for the winter, so I don't have more video of the sound, but so far it sounds amazing... can't wait till spring to hear it on the open road.

It's a great mod. I've had mine for years now. Still a great balance between great sound and noise.

Love the flared pipes idea. Obvious once seeing it but nothing my shop did when modding my back box.

Nice! An expensive tool purchase justified by a cheap stocker exhaust mod is definitely a post I can get behind! Looks great... now you'll be hunting for more welding projects...

It is nice isn't it! I started to collect various nice tools since I started to do some of the work myself a couple of years ago. First 5 years I went to the dealer even of the oil changes. Doing fluids, plugs, TA's, thermostat etc since has been a very nice next level of the ownership. And even with some new tools for every job I save money on top...

And this forum always provide missing guidelines!
