Vanos check valves

I have searched the TIS service manual as well as the forum.......does anyone know where the vanos system check valves are located on the S65? I have that rattle on startup if my car has sat for a few days between uses. I know where they are on the N54 but not the S65. I'm not driving my car as much lately as I have a new work vehicle so the noise is a new event for Purl and I. No other issues, power loss, CE light or stored codes. Appreciate any help!

Sorry to revive an old thread, but wanted to post some info in case anyone else needs it.

There are 4 check valves in total in the engine, 2 for each cylinder head.

Here are pics of where they are located.

Hope this helps anyone looking for info. I’m about to do this job.

Super thankful you posted this. I couldn’t find the lower valves for the life of me. I was going to like the post this morning after finding it and there was my name as having already seen it and liked it before. So this memory of mine perhaps not so infallible lol.

Do you know the torque for these? I marked the ones I removed and the new ones going in I would really have to crank on to get in the exact same position. Not sure how tight to go with these.

I had a thread on this a couple years back. Another forum member replaced them and it didn’t get rid of the rattle on start up.

Haven’t dug into this rabbit hole in a while but I believe the consensus is the rattle is from the actual adjusters at the end of the cam shafts. I can surmise thet a possible leaky check valve could have caused the rattle downstream but once its internal to the adjuster it needs to be replaced.

I do not know the torque spec on those, sorry. I’d love to know how this goes for ya and if it stops and leakdown and or the ticking.

I did replace all 4 valves. The lower valve on the passenger side was a hoot to access because of the power steering reservoir and the coolant reservoir crowding the area. Thankfully I already had the car on jack stands with the front fender liner out. That and a handful of extensions with elbow sockets finally did the job. But regrettably, no impact on the startup clatter that occurs occasionally after sitting.

The ball on the new check valves didn’t always reseat as I would expect ( I was playing around with them before install), so this may still be the issue. Meaning it’s related to the check valve function/design rather than an aged valve. Just a theory.

just picked up a 48k mile s65. how long until I need to replace this vanos check valve?

Replacing both timing chain tensioners helped to quiet the start up rattle on mine. It's not totally gone, but much, much, better now. PS: I still have the bad engine mount rattle noise yet to fix from my earlier thread last month.

I have not. I’ve been a little lazy of late. I’m also trying to do more than these if I get into it. Probably get to it at the beginning of summer.
