Help me get rid of drone!!

Hello all,
I just purchased a 2011 Jerez Black e92 manual, competition package with a G-Power SKII kit. It currently has a full Becker X-Pipe and catback exhaust. It drones like mad from idle to ~2,200 rpm. I wouldn’t mind the car being quieter and I’m interested in putting cats on it.
Would adding high flow 3” cats help with drone?
Thanks,
Jorgen

I recently added 2 AR25 resonators to mine to reduce some of the rasp and drone at the same RPM range. HFC will help as well.

How much did the resonators help?

I got the short body one and it most of the drone is gone. Had I gone with a longer body, the effect would've been more profound.

Corsa rear, you're gonna rasp without resonators but no drone.

You should rework the x-pipe you have now, you can try 200 CEL's in the place of the primaries and add another resonator in the rear of the x-pipe making it a quad resonated setup.

That’s an option I was considering. Thanks.

The car previously had a Akropovic full system but was removed for this system unfortunately. But it did have cats.
Good to know about the above combo. Maybe adding a couple resonators to the x-pipe would be a good place to start... thanks.

A couple resonators and maybe cats, even if in the secondary position, does a LOT for drone

Yes but akrapovic has cats in the secondary position. I was Saying that cats are not to be installed in the primary position.

I would stay away from cats completely in a supercharged car it’s not worth the possible issues you may face.

I have the bimmerworld fully catless x pipe with zero resonators and a corsa rear. Absolutely no droning. Perfect high pitch exotic sound.

OP: perhaps try a corsa rear with your current x pipe. You can source a used corsa rear around the $1200 range on this forum.

Good luck

If you can get your hands on one, a borla quad resonated x pipe would probably help a lot

That sounds amazing. I think at this point I’ll try to modify my x-pipe before I look at getting a completely new setup. Again, I don’t mind the sound. It’s pretty loud for my tastes, but the drone is my main concern. If I can add resonators and/or cats for a few hundred dollars, I’ll be dollars ahead trying to fix what I already have.
If I could trade for the Corsa, I’d be very interested in that though...

I have added cats to the Bimmerworld X pipe. I have no drone, other than the rasp of the MPE at heavy load and low RPM its an awesome sound. Working on replacing the MPE for a different cat back to get rid of the rasp.

This car tends to have some drone around 2k rpm, but 2k is lower than where you'd usually drive this one anyway

My track E90 has Bimmerworld LT headers and their race xpipe with no resonators and no cats and it's loud but doesn't drone.
On the street I would run the BW race xpipe without resonators and with cats welded into the secondary position

Shadow, Im sure you have posted in the past but why do you prefer the cat to be in location 2 vs 1? I personally placed it in 1 due to emissions and can pass emissions with out an issue. Just couscous on your recommendation.

I lost an engine due to the aftermarket cat being in the primary position. That kind of sours the idea for me

I have the ESS HFC Xpipe. After 3 seasons of track use one of the cats completely collapsed, resulting in a blown engine. There has been a supercharged M3 with the same xpipe that also had this issue.
Granted it was under extreme use conditions, but still, a blown engine is a blown engine.

For emissions I'd do the 90 degree elbow + mini cats, for smell I'd put the cats in the secondary position.

If you aren't going to track or supercharger you are probably ok, but it's something to keep in mind. The costs of a blown engine are great and you're down one car for 6 months. I have extra cars so I only lost the track season, but if you don't have another one you'll need to buy a car for the meantime.

Corsa is the best option. It has patented drone cancelling cans, no drone. Excellent sound. The MPE will also eliminate drone but does have some rasp. I have an ess625 kit with Ess mid/hfc, I’ve had several exhausts. These are the best option to avoid drone. Don’t waste your money experimenting, I’ve already done it for you.
