Tire wear at the track
Hey guys, help me read the front tire wear. The middle band of tread is worn down on the outside edge more the the outside band at its inside edge. Does this look like normal wear? I was running around 38psi taking measurements right after a cool down lap.

You're dragging the tire across the pavement which is causing that to happen. It's a symptom of incorrect tire pressure. I used to have the same problem until I bumped up my cold pressure by 1 or 2psi.
Two questions: what's your alignment like, and what cold pressures are you running? Pic related from when I had it on my car.

This happens on virtually every RE71R at onset. My guess is it doesn't help to have a camber limited from setup but no this is not unusual.

It was a cool day so I started at 30/31 psi and after my first session it was up to 40psi so I bled it back to 38. After my second session it was back up to 40 psi so I brought it back to 38 again. I measured the pressure the next day cold and it was 27/28.
I have -2.25' with zero toe for the front alignment. |

This is a tough one. Your hot pressures are already fairly high, so raising your cold pressures isn't going to help like it did for me.
I wouldn't really call it a huge problem unless the wear is so significant that you're getting into the wear bar before the rest of the tire face is gone. It might just be the reality of your car's specific setup, your driving style, etc.

They are worn down pretty close to the wear bars. I could definitely drive a little smoother to help preserve the tread life. I was on a technical track, Island Motorsport, with 19 turns over 2.3km.

The wear is abrupt at first and slows substantially. They aren't great wearing track tires if you are really pushing it for extended runs but they start to wear more evenly through their life.

This is classic RE-71R wear and happens regardless of pressures you set; I ran 35-36 PSI hot.
The only cure is aggressive tire rotation. I get about 12 heat cycles from a set of RE-71R at most these days before I have to throw them away.

2-3 days? That's not much of a budget HPDE tire is it?

Agreed, 2-3 is laughable. Maybe being overdriven or something?

Sounds like this will be my first and only set of RE71R's. I'm hoping to get 10 track days out of a set of streetable tires. What would be a better option, the RS4 or AD08R?

The AD08R is an old tire and won't have the grip of the RS4. It's also really expensive ($384 for their 265/35/18). Looks like Tire Rack has a lot of older stock in some sizes which probably means it's being phased out in favor of the new AD052. |

I could see getting 4 days out of an re71r, but I'd be so nervous on the 4th day I'd cord em and lose the rest of the sessions. Mine wore exactly like pictured, it's just how they wear.
If you want BUDGET track day tires, look at the indy500s, sumitomo z3s, ps91s or similar. They won't be anywhere near as fast (WUT NO TROPHIES?), and the sumis and ps91s will chunk, but you'll get >4 HPDE days out of them and save a bunch of money. |

The AD08R is quite durable, in my experience. I would just get a different tire and see what you think. Maybe you're willing to pay a little more for the AD08R, for example, because it lasts a bit longer but sacrifices ultimate grip. Or maybe you'll find a certain tire fits your driving style better.

NT01 for 6-8 days. RS4 I got about 8 and had lots of tread left but it seemed to have heat cycled out and didn't grip well. Tossed those early.

Yes, but an NT01 is an insanely aggressive tire to drive on the street, especially after it starts to wear.
