7900RPM?

Anyone have this happen to them?

Happened this morning. This was after a 15 min. drive on the freeway, outdoor temp you can see was 55 deg F. I would figure the car would be up to temp already. Any reason why this is still showing 7,900 RPM on the limiter?

The RED is the redline. The YELLOW is not the redline

It’s showing as close to 8400 as it gets. Redline is the redline not the yellow line. For some reason, the gauge never looks like it shows 8400. At least mine never has. It looks more like 8250 or maybe 8300. Even with my 8600 limiter, it moved only about 100 rpm from what you are seeing.

Ahh....you are right. It's been a while since I've been in my M3 (since I lost my other one back in Jan) so forgot what the tachometer looks like.

I just dug up another post with a nice screenshot of theirs, so agree with you 100%....good to know everything is ok.

Makes sense to me now. Thanks for good explanation.

It doesn't go to 8400 because the gauge face itself is cut at 8250. That red portion is fixed.

It's taken straight from the E60 M5 parts bin, hence why it doesn't reflect the true 8400 redline of the M3.

Also a bit of parallax error with where the red/needle line up.

I remember getting that gap between the yellow and red when my thermostat was bad (stuck open). Mine would do it every few drives. It was followed with a code (2B59) that did not trigger an SES light. I'm 99% sure that mine does not normally have that gap, but I will take a look at it today when I drive home and report back.

That is the way the tach on my 08 looks with an 8600 rpm tune. It did not look like that with the factory 8400 rpm tune.

Yours with a tune looks like mine above or like OP? If like mine, why would they make the white line in the yellow not line up with the white line on the fixed piece when at operating temp with the standard factory tune?

My picture angle makes it look like the white line in the yellow is not even with white line that's fixed, but it is exactly even.

I do not have a tune as far as I know.

Genuinely curious.

My white lines were not even until I got a Dinan 8600 rpm tune.

Any somewhat easy way to tell if I have an engine tune? I have the BMW standard tools.

I don’t know the answer to that. I suspect you would have to look at the parameters of your tune and I am not sure any scan software lets you do that.

This is not normal people!
White line inside the yellow moving tack should be above the 8k mark, like 8100ish (visually below when you're in the drivers seat)

This is how it's supposed to be, slightly above the 8k mark
