Dinan 4.10 LSD Gear Whine
Just wondering if there is anything that can be done about gear whine in a Dinan 4.10 LSD. It is apparent between 70 and 90 KPH when on light throttle. It is annoying.
I am also not a huge fan of the 4.10 gears and I may swap back to 3.85 if possible. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Cheers,

What does Dinan specify for fluid? A 75w140 with FM additive? Do they provide any guidance on how much of the additive you need?
Remember that the OEM LSD received complaints from early owners about being too noisy so BMW upped the dosage of friction modifier in the gear oil.

I've not noticed any discernible difference in gear whine with any 4.10's I've heard. If the subframe had aftermarket bushings installed, that could transmit more noise than the stock rubber bushings. I don't see friction modifier doing anything for gear whine, only clutch chatter which is a different sound. Abnormally excessive gear whine may be an indicator that the lash was set too tight during assembly.

I did talk to Dinan and they pretty much said to just deal with it... I have read on other posts that the Dinan 4.10 was loud. Might be why they do not even offer to sell them anymore. I will talk to my mechanic buddy to see if he can check the gear lash for me this winter while my car is sleeping. Or, possibly will trade diffs with someone!! Cheers, Dave

Now that I remember, when I did the 4.10s in my E46 M3 I also had the shifter switched out which removed the rubber bushings. I got more whine from that than the gears. Put 20k miles on those gears with no issues.

Thanks Jae
I just installed a set of 3.91's with a new clutch lsd, and it screams like a freaking hyena. 10x worse than my 3.62's did. Granted i have all solid bushings and no interior (e46), but it still should not sound the way it does. Pulled it out today and going back to the assembler.

Much easier than the e46 diff "shelf" removal. I'll take the e90 job all day long!

Very well could be. The first guy who assembled mine had the pinion .22mm too far into the ring. Screamed like crazy.
