Need to buy fan blade only - help?

Hey guys,

So one of the blades is out of balance on my engine cooling fan and causes a terrible vibration. Frank at TTFS told me that I can buy just the fan blades and save a lot of money over the whole assembly. I was told it was a dealer only part, but hte local dealer won't sell anything but the whole assembly. Any idea what I can do?

i didn't find anything like just a plastic fan on a quick search, but ecs sells some aftermarket efans that may be a more cost effective option.
i don't know what the cfm rating is on the efans they sell, but if it is more than oem, you might get an upgrade in as well.

I deal in new/used M3 parts and I've never seen new blades for the OEM fan available by themselves. Even if you did, the blades are pressed on, removing or replacing the blade disc without damage isn't a task for the DIY'er.

Replacing the OEM fan with an aftermarket fan is a horrible idea, if I may be blunt. The OEM fan has tremendous capacity, but more importantly its speed is varied by the DME according to cooling and AirCon needs. If you remove it you will completely lose that functionality and you will set fault codes with the car that can't be cleared. It's really not an option being such a critical component to the longevity of your engine.

You can find good used M3 fan assemblies for around $400. Heck, I've even got one available right now. Not everyone can afford new OEM parts but don't be "that" type of owner by stuffing an aftermarket fan in this M3.

Yea Ive been looking to hopefully find one in a salvage yard lately. Didn't have any luck as you were saying on just the blade. Thanks for the info!

I agree that for something as important as primary cooling, you want OE quality. You probably could find something universal in the aftermarket but I'd try to find stock. If you want universal aftermarket, look at Cooling Components Inc. They have fully shrouded bosch 2 speed motor fans in a few shroud sizes. The fan is actually a Derale HO, I think PN 16917.

I guess have the same issue. not sure what exactly. The engine vibrates at the 2k rpm level. Is that why happening? My car is at the dealer now actually. but last time it came out like that. I have a private company warranty which ends this June. Should I ask them about my engine and report some test results? My service advisor wanted to test the oil and see if some pieces there so they can report to the company and get my rod's done... we were gonna do the test after I was gonna go to the track last weekend(sprin mountain ranch,pahrump) BUT!! Disappointingly my serpentine belt broke on the way there I'm all sad about it..

You know the fan is electric, right? Would have nothing to do with why your engine vibrates at 2k rpm.

Tell Frank hes a liar. Lol

Might be worth trying to balance with weights first if its not really far out. I had a kitchen range hood (centrifical fan with many blades) that i was able to balance by moving a home made metal clip around until it was good.

I couldn't tell you how to manually cycle the fan on to try this though.

BMW ISTA diagnostic software has a test module to manually turn on the fan. Not sure about other home mechanic grade scanners.

Also my engine mount is not electric too but it makes vibration if its broke or crack. Your engine mount has a fan I think :

Car doesn't have any issues getting up to 210 and turning the fan on. Could always just let it idle lol. I watched it yesterday and the whole fan assembly was shaking when the fan came on.

There is a stabilization ring that goes around the perimeter of the fan. It's quite likely that it's broken or you're missing part of the blades. If the blade assembly wobbles then it's likely the motor shaft is broken or the motor bushings are worn out. Either way you need a new fan. I have one for sale if you need one cheaper than dealer price.

you know I actually took a closer look at the blades today and didn't really see a whole lot wrong with them. I did find a rusty metal clip at he base of one of them though. I know my vibration only comes about when the car gets over 210* and i've visually seen the fan assembly shaking and heard it making a noise while its running. Should I try to re-balance it or should I just bite the bullet and pick up a new assembly?
